Warriors No. 5 in Volleyball magazine pollThe University of Hawaii volleyball team (17-8) remained at No. 5 in the latest Volleyball magazine poll released yesterday.The Warriors split two matches against Long Beach State last week, and they close out the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season with two matches at home against Pacific on Friday and Saturday. UCLA (24-3) is still No. 1, followed by Pepperdine, Penn State and Long Beach State.
Odamura, Carmichael make Hawaii-Hilo hallKristy Odamura and Maggie Carmichael will be inducted into the University of Hawaii-Hilo's Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame on April 25 at the campus center dining room during the school's all-sports banquet.Odamura, a former shortstop for the Vulcans softball team, participated in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney for Canada. Carmichael is a longtime booster. Hawaii-Hilo will also honor 27 Hawaii-Hilo athletes who will have completed their eligibility at the end of the 2004-05 school year. Tickets are $30. Hawaii tops Tulsa in softballMelissa Coogan pitched her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, leading Hawaii to a 3-0 victory over Tulsa in Oklahoma yesterday.Denise Dahlberg's two-run triple was the big hit for the Rainbow Wahine (21-20, 2-5 Western Athletic Conference). The Golden Hurricane fell to 21-23 and 2-3. » Hawaii-Hilo and Montana State-Billings split a softball doubleheader yesterday in Montana. The Vulcans rode the pitching of Britni Rodriguez in the first game. She gave up six hits in a 2-0 victory, her fifth shutout of the season. Meghan Jost led the UHH offense with a solo homer. In the second game, the Vulcans rallied from a 9-3 deficit, but lost 9-8. Charity Senas hit her third homer of the season for Hawaii-Hilo.
Rainbow Wahine tied for 11th at StanfordHawaii finished in a tie for 11th with Oregon State yesterday in the Peg Bernard California Collegiate women's golf tournament at Stanford, Calif.Washington won the meet with a two-round total of 587. The Cougars' Kim Welch won medalist honors with a 2-under 140. The Rainbow Wahine finished at 637 and were led by Sara Odelius, who tied for 30th with a 155. » Hawaii-Hilo is in fourth place after the first day of the Chico State Wells Fargo Invite women's golf tournament yesterday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, Calif. Vulcans freshman Kiilani Matsuyoshi shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for seventh place. Hawaii-Hilo (324) is 16 shots behind first-place Chico State (318). » The Hawaii-Hilo men's team is in seventh place at the 32nd Buzzini Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, Calif. Cal State Stanislaus leads with a 2-under 574 after two rounds. UHH is 18 strokes back at 592. Western Washington's Tim Feenstra is the tournament leader at 4-under 140. Nick Mason and Garrett Okamura are tied for seventh and lead the Vulcans at 1-under 143.
Strongest Man Competition this weekendThe 14th annual Hawaii's Strongest Man Competition is at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center on Sunday.In addition, the third annual Hawaii's Strongest Teen Competition is slated for Saturday. Mililani High School football player Sene Ma'afala is back to defend his title. UH sailors place 15th in San FranciscoThe University of Hawaii finished 10th in the women's division and 15th in the coed division at the Saint Francis Intersectional sailing event in San Francisco.Shandy Buckley and Cassandra Harris of the women's team and Jennifer Warnock and B.J. Clausen of the coed team led UH. UC Irvine won the event, followed by USC in second place.
