HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Farrington’s Kealoha
leaves no doubt against
McKinley

C'ani Kealoha had doubts a year ago.

Those doubts are now long gone. The sophomore guard pumped in 17 points as Farrington outlasted McKinley 50-33 last night at the Lady Governors' gym.

Farrington (10-6) improved to 2-5 in the tough East Division of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Kealoha, a strong penetrator with a smooth shooting touch, is a major reason why.

"She's understanding what she needs to do," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "She played JV last year because she felt like she wasn't ready. We wanted to combine her with Sunshine (Misa-Uli)."

Kealoha had four steals to help the Lady Govs neutralize McKinley's perimeter game. The rebounding corps led by Tanya Sale and Kapio Alatasi, who had six boards apiece, gave Farrington an edge in the post. Their quickness helped Farrington grab 12 steals.

"They kept the same level of intensity on defense," Tumaneng noted. "We've worked on it at practice. In the league right now, every possession and point are important. It can cost you a game."

McKinley dropped to 1-6 in East play (8-10 overall).

Farrington's win evened the score with McKinley, which won the first meeting at the Lady Tigers' gym, 44-42.

Farrington shot 48 percent from the field (20 of 42) and forced McKinley to come out of its 1-2-2 zone early on. The Lady Tigers shot 26 percent from the floor (11 of 42) and trailed by as many as 26 points in the second half.

Kamakani Victorino sank four 3-pointers in a row in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap. She led McKinley with 14 points. Crystal Tafai, a freshman center, added eight points off the bench.

McKinley struggled offensively from the opening tip, missing all six of its field-goal attempts in the first quarter as Farrington took an 11-1 lead. Farrington extended the lead into the fourth quarter despite an effective McKinley fullcourt press.

"For us, it's about playing better. If we do that, we can win," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "Crystal and Pearly (Togiai) grew up today. They got pounded inside, but they're learning how to work together. In the second half, they were all diving for every ball and playing their guts out. That's what makes basketball fun."

Lady Tigers guard Kaitlyn Ikehara sat out with a knee injury.
