Phillips earns spot in National Golden Gloves

John Phillips of Wahiawa beat Jesse Jones by a unanimous decision last night to earn a spot in the National Golden Gloves tournament May 15-21 in Little Rock, Ark.

All three judges awarded the fight to Phillips, who beat Brent Rodrigues 3-0 Friday night. The rest of Hawaii's team will be named April 16.

Vulcans sting Hornets for third win

Sean Tamura drove in Gary Ahu for the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning as the Hawaii-Hilo baseball team rallied past Sacramento State 6-3 yesterday in Sacramento, Calif.

The Vulcans trailed 3-2, but tied the game in the sixth when Alvis Satele's grounder scored Johnny Dudoit. Hilo (3-33) added two more runs in the ninth when Ahu tripled to right field.

Pitcher Eddie Gutierrez entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up just one hit to pick up his second win of the year. Gutierrez also struck out three and walked three batters.

Moanalua alum Jim Strombach batted 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead the Hornets past the Vulcans 9-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. The game was a makeup for Friday's rained out match.

Strombach led the team in hits and runs. Teammate Taylor Watanabe, a redshirt freshman from Aiea, scored one run for the Hornets (11-20-1).

Seasiders blank Sea Warriors

Echo Allred tossed a three-hitter to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team past Hawaii Pacific 1-0 in a PacWest game yesterday in Laie.

Allred struck out four batters, walked three and helped advance the winning run.

Rebecca Orosz hit a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, and advanced to third on Allred's ground out. She then scored on a passed ball.

The Sea Warriors threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. But Dayna Berry grounded to second baseman Chynna Wilcox, who tagged one runner and threw to Brooke Hilton at first base to complete the double play and the game.

The Sea Warriors (27-13, 8-4 PWC) responded in the second game of the doubleheader with an 11-0, five-inning shutout.

BYUH finished the season 15-23 overall and 5-9 in the league.

UH golfers finish next to last

The University of Hawaii men's golf team finished 14th out of 15 teams at the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., yesterday.

Hawaii shot a 305 yesterday to finish with a 54-hole total of 901. UNLV won the tournament with a total of 859.

Kipp Riehle of Arizona, who competed for the as a non-scoring individual, won top honors after firing a 3-under 68 in the third round to finish at 206. Hawaii was led by Jarrett Hamamoto, who tied for 37th with a total of 223.

Oregon's Matt Ma, an Iolani graduate, finished tied for 11th after firing a 2-under 69 yesterday.

Owens to speak at Quarterback Club

Former University of Hawaii All-American football player Chad Owens will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Owens, who finished his eligibility this past December, also won the Mosi Tatupu Award. The award is given to the nation's best special team's senior.

Also speaking at the luncheon are Punahou baseball coach Eric Kadooka and Kalani girls basketball coach Daryl Imanaka.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom with the program following at noon. The public is invited.
