Parkinson's disease rehabilitation therapies will be discussed at a public seminar from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the Ala Moana Hotel, Hibiscus Ballroom.
"Move It or Lose It: Maintaining Function Through Movement" is the theme of the event, being held in recognition of April as Parkinson's Awareness Month.
Parkinson's disease, a chronic neurological disorder, affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans, with 60,000 new cases each year, according to the Hawaii Parkinson Association.
Symptoms include shaking in the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face, stiffness of the limbs and trunk, slowness of movement and impaired balance and coordination. There is no cure for the disease, but there are several treatments.
At the seminar, neurologists Melvin Yee, co-medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation-Kuakini Outreach Center, and Leo Maher, American Academy of Neurology Fellow, will discuss medical and surgical advances and answer questions.
Jill Wakabayashi, physical therapist assistant, and Anna Campbell, occupational therapist, will discuss how therapy and the use of functional aids can help patients maintain mobility.
Registration at the door is $30, which includes a continental breakfast and parking validation.
