Kalaheo coach resigns to
spend time with family
This was going to be the payoff year for Tony Tuioti's squad at Kalaheo.
A growing home team, though, has bumped the former University of Hawaii lineman to the sidelines for now.
Tuioti stepped down as head football coach at Kalaheo on Thursday, athletic director Lewis Fuddy said.
"He was great with the kids. He was always positive and pushing to have them keep their grades up. He did good for us."
"He has increased responsibilities at work (Hale Kipa) and another baby is on the way," he added. "They're expecting another little one this week."
In Tuioti's second season at the helm, Kalaheo went 3-4 in Oahu Interscholastic Association White play last year (3-5 overall).
"We set up a preseason game at Kealakehe. He felt that this coming year, the team will do well. He has his system going," Fuddy said. "He's a little disappointed about leaving. He didn't really want to, but he has to take care of his family first. He left the door open. He might return in the future."
Fuddy isn't certain who the front-runner for the opening is.
"Some of his staff was leaving already, so I don't know which of his staff will be here," he said. "We hope the new coach is selected by spring ball, around mid-May."
Two coaches who have expressed interest are former head coach David Cosier and former assistant John Kapele Jr.
Kapele was an assistant when Mike Akiu was head coach.
Résumés will be accepted until April 18, Fuddy said. Mail them to Kalaheo High School athletics, 730 Iliaina St., Kailua, HI 96734. Or fax to 254-7907.
