HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Kaiser comes up short
against Kahuku

They wear red, but the Lady Raiders of Kahuku are blue-collar all the way.

Artevia Wily scored 14 points and Aisha Ale tallied 11 as Kahuku pulled out a 50-48 win over Kaiser last night at Thomas Walker Gym.

Fourth-ranked Kahuku (12-2) improved to 7-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East. Kaiser barely missed a chance to tighten up the East race, falling to 4-3 in league play (10-6 overall).

The Lady Raiders pounded the boards, outrebounding Kaiser 29-20. However, it was another big win complicated by turnovers. Kahuku gave the ball away 19 times against Kaiser's man and fullcourt pressure defenses.

"Too many turnovers. We're not that inexperienced in our starting five," coach Wendy Anae said. "But Kaiser is always scrappy."

Kahuku committed six turnovers over a 3-minute span in the final quarter to help Kaiser stay close. The visiting Lady Cougars rallied from an eight-point deficit to take a 44-42 lead on Kilioe Aliifua's layup with 3:21 left.

From that point on, however, the Lady Raiders didn't commit another turnover. Camilla Ah-Hoy swished a 16-foot baseline jumper to tie the game, and then fed Ale for a 16-footer from the left elbow as Kahuku regained the lead, 46-44, with 2:27 left.

Wily then stole the ball and scored on a breakaway layup to give Kahuku a four-point lead with 2:07 remaining. Kaiser pulled within two on a pair of free throws by Aliifua, but Ane Vea drove for a layup to give Kahuku a 50-46 lead with 1:42 left.

Sharde Pratt sank two foul shots to bring Kaiser within two with 1:30 remaining. Ah-Hoy missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 48 seconds to go, but Kaiser failed to capitalize. Aliifua's pass to Pratt in the key was tipped away and led to a jump ball with 9.1 seconds left, giving Kahuku possession.

With 5 seconds on the clock, Ah-Hoy missed another 1-and-1. Kehau Bangay rebounded and was bumped to the floor by Ah-Hoy, but there was no call. Kaiser was unable to advance the ball past midcourt as the buzzer sounded.

"Yes, that was a foul, but it's over," Kaiser coach Lisa Mann said. "I'm not going to blame it on one call. We were in a good situation. We had time and it didn't work out."

Mann was optimistic, even after consecutive losses.

"We played a lot better tonight. This is how we're capable of playing," Mann said, referring to a lopsided home loss to Kalaheo. "It's hard to beat Kahuku, especially at their home."

Ale, who made five of 10 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds. Center Kamaile Hughes managed seven points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Vea came off the bench to score 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting, and give her team a big spark.

"We had some big help come off the bench," Ale said. "Ane was mean tonight."

Aliifua led Kaiser with 17 points, but had only three rebounds. Pratt had 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. She made eight of her nine free-throw tries to help Kaiser, which finished 17-for-19 from the line.

The Lady Raiders took control in the first half with a 10-0 run. Vea came off the bench to spark the Lady Raiders with a pair of inside baskets as they zoomed to a 17-8 lead. Kaiser committed 10 turnovers by halftime, but trailed just 28-23.
