Soldier killed in Iraq ID'd as California man

The first casualty in the Hawaii Army National Guard's 29th Brigade Combat Team since the unit was deployed to Iraq last month has been identified as Spec. Glenn J. Watkins.

Watkins, of Carlsbad, Calif., was one of more than 70 Washington Army National Guard soldiers who volunteered to remain in Iraq after their unit returned home, the Seattle-based ABC affiliate KOMO reported yesterday.

Watkins, 42, died Tuesday when a bomb exploded alongside the Humvee that he was riding in, the Pentagon reported. He was listed as a member of the Washington Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry, which is part of Washington Army National Guard's 81st Brigade Combat Team.

Watkins, a 23-year military veteran, was mobilized with the 81st Brigade Combat Team in November 2003 and served in Iraq until they redeployed in late March and early April of this year, the TV station reported.

He volunteered to remain in Iraq and serve with his old unit, the 184th Infantry of the California Army National Guard, which had been mobilized as part of the 29th Infantry Brigade.

He is survived by his wife and four children, three of whom live with his wife in Tacoma, and a son in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.
