Special publications focus on pope news

The Hawaii Catholic Herald will publish special editions this month to report events in Rome as a successor to John Paul II is chosen.

An April 15 issue will include coverage of the funeral and burial of John Paul and the convening of a conclave of cardinals to select a new pope.

Stories on the new pope will be featured in an April 28 edition.

Subscribers will receive all the issues. People may order copies by calling the Herald at 533-1791. The cost is 75 cents per copy, with an additional charge for postage.

Yesterday's edition of the diocesan newspaper was devoted to coverage of the pope's death, reaction locally and worldwide, and analysis of John Paul's legacy and impact. A limited number of copies was printed. Call for information about availability.

2 churches to put on play about homeless

A musical dramatization about the life of homeless people and those who try to help them will be presented at two Honolulu churches this month.

"Truly Dually" was written by Michael Ullman, a graduate student at the University of Hawaii School of Social Work. The title refers to the dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse, which characterizes many chronically homeless people.

The performances are free, but reservations are required. Write trulydually@yahoo.com or call Ullman at 391-7963. The play will be presented:

» April 22: 7:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 1822 Keeaumoku St.

» April 24: 4:30 p.m., St. Andrew's Cathedral Tenney Theatre.

» May 10 and 12: 7:30 p.m., Windward Community College, Paliku Theatre.

The performances are sponsored by the state Department of Health, Adult Mental Health Division; the UH School of Social Work; National Association of Social Workers, Hawaii chapter; Oahu Homeless Continuum of Care; and the Windward Homeless Coalition.
