Rainbow Wahine set 2 personal bests

Senior Alexis Fredrick and sophomore Ku'ulei Karratti threw lifetime best distances in the hammer throw at the first day of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational yesterday in Los Angeles.

Fredrick finished eighth with a toss of 48.30 meters while Karratti posted a 45.27 score. Junior Novelle Murray finished seventh with a toss of 50.65 meters, just missing her personal best.

The meet continues through the weekend.

Vulcans comeback falls short

Junior Brian Blauser went 3-for-5 with a home run as Sacramento State survived a late UH-Hilo run to win 7-5 yesterday at Hornet Field.

The Vulcans scored two runs in the eighth and ninth to make it close as Christopher Campbell and Johnny Dudoit each had three hits to lead UH-Hilo, who fell to 2-32.

Vulcans sweep softball series

Leadoff batter Lisa Jackson went 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs in two games as UH-Hilo swept Western New Mexico 8-3 and 9-1 yesterday in Silver City, N.M.

Britni Rodriguez improved to 9-0, giving up just five hits while striking out nine in the first game while Sarah Steele improved to 9-3 by giving up just three hits in the second game.

UH-Hilo is now 28-6 and 13-1 in the PacWest.

UH-Hilo wins golf match

Ki'ilani Matsuyoshi shot an even par-72 to claim medalist honors and help UH-Hilo defeat BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific yesterday at the George Fazio Course at Turtle Bay.

Christa Schneiber led the Seasiders with an 88.

Golden Gloves this weekend

The Hawaii State Golden Gloves boxing championship will be held this weekend at Wahiawa District Park.

Organizers expect to hold one bout today with the rest of the tournament beginning at 6 p.m. tomorrow. Winners advance to the national Golden Gloves tournament May 15-21 at Little Rock, Ark.

» The Hawaii State Junior Olympics Boxing Championships will be held April 16 at 6 p.m. at the Palolo Recreation Center.

The weigh-ins are April 10 at 3 p.m. at the same site.

The 15- and 16-year-old champions advance to the national championships in Brownsville, Texas, in June. Adults will compete in non-tournament bouts in addition to the Junior Olympics event.

Wahine playing in UCSB tournament

The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team will compete tomorrow at the UC Santa Barbara Spring Tournament. UH will face Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Irvine and Pepperdine.

Also in the seven-team event are Long Beach State and the host Gauchos.

Hawaii will be without incoming seniors Victoria Prince, Susie Boogaard and Ashley Watanabe, incoming junior Alicia Arnott and redshirt freshman Caroline Blood. The five instead will be participating in the Relay for Life, a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, at UH's Cooke Field.

The event runs from 7 tonight through 7 a.m. tomorrow. The Wahine have a home page that accepts donations at www.acsevents.org/faf/home.
