HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Kailua’s Matsumoto
rides wind to shutout
of Kaiser

Rather than let the wind and rain throw him off his game, Kevin Matsumoto allowed yesterday's blustery conditions in Kailua to work in his favor.

With a stiff breeze adding bite to his curveball, the Kailua senior tossed a five-hit shutout as the Surfriders remained undefeated in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Kaiser.

Matsumoto, who pitched a one-hitter against Castle in his previous start, struck out five and walked one in handing Kaiser its first division loss.

"With this wind it was pretty nasty," Matsumoto said of a breaking pitch that handcuffed the Kaiser hitters much of the afternoon.

"When I got to school and I saw this weather, I was hoping it would hold up. When I got to the field the wind just picked up, so I just adjusted and thought about what I would do."

Kailua improved to 5-0 with the win while Kaiser, which had beaten its first three OIA opponents by a total of 33-5, fell to 3-1.

"This guy was the best pitcher we've faced by far," Kaiser coach Peter Ho said.

Kailua scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the third to give Matsumoto ample support.

With two out in the second, Kurt Sasaoka's fly ball dropped in when Kaiser center fielder Scott Uehara slipped on the muddy field. Following a walk to Aaron Kunioka, Michael D'Alessio lined a single up the middle to score Sasaoka from second base. A wild pitch later allowed Kunioka to cross the plate and put Kailua up 2-0.

The Surfriders padded the lead the next inning on another two-out bloop hit by Sasaoka. With runners on first and second, Sasaoka lifted a pop-up to shallow left field that fell between two Kaiser fielders as Kekoa Sua sprinted to the plate. Ryan Rodrigues then scored the game's final run on a balk.

"Every time we made a mistake, they capitalized," Ho said. "Good teams will do that."

Matsumoto made sure the lead stood up the rest of the way. He used a batting-practice fastball to get ahead in the count and finished the job with his curveball and slider along with his normal fastball.

"He has a variety of pitches," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "If he doesn't have one pitch, he can rely on other pitches. Today he used all of his pitches."

Matsumoto hasn't always had the type of command he displayed yesterday. He started against Kamehameha in the 2003 state championship game as a sophomore and didn't make it out of the first inning in the Surfriders' 4-2 loss. He then struggled with his control last season.

But he put the disappointments behind him this summer and is pitching with confidence as a senior.

"Last year I was a horrible pitcher. This summer I found myself and worked hard and got stronger," he said.

"I'm more confident now. I know I can hit my spots with any pitch anywhere in the count."
