Rasay to start at setter for Warriors

Hawaii senior setter Daniel Rasay was scheduled to make the second start of his career when the No. 6 Hawaii volleyball team takes on No. 4 Long Beach State today (4 p.m. Hawaii time) in Long Beach, Calif.

Rasay will replace sophomore Brian Beckwith, who has been slowed by a sprained right knee. Beckwith suffered the injury two weeks ago in a match at UC San Diego and did not practice Monday.

Hawaii coach Mike Wilton said Beckwith will play if needed. Junior Matt Carere will make his second consecutive start, replacing Jose Delgado at outside hitter.

Vulcans take 2 at Western New Mexico

Hawaii-Hilo swept host Western New Mexico in a softball doubleheader yesterday, 6-3 and 6-1.

The Vulcans improved to 26-6 and 11-1 in the Pacific West Conference.

Hawaii-Hilo freshman Meghan Jost was 6-for-8 on the day with six RBIs, two home runs and a double.

Natalie Fujimoto and Leo Sing Chow also homered for the Vulcans in the first game.

UH coach Nelson returns to play former team

Hawaii tennis coach John Nelson returns to familiar territory tomorrow when the Rainbow Warriors play his old team, No. 41 San Diego State.

Nelson coached at SDSU for 10 seasons.

UH junior Ryan Sceats takes a 10-match win streak on the trip, which also includes a dual match at UC Irvine Sunday.

» Senior Kimberly Curtis defeated Andrea Barker 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the Rainbow Wahine tennis team's third-straight victory yesterday -- 4-3 over Utah State at Logan, Utah.

The Wahine swept all three doubles matches and finished their road trip with a 3-1 record. They'll conclude their regular season with home matches against Azusa Pacific and Boise State on April 12 and 19.

» Hawaii-Hilo lost 7-2 yesterday at No. 11 California San Diego. Mai Fujii had a hand in both points for the Vulcans, winning a singles match and teaming with Tiana Lum-Tucker for a doubles win.

» At Laie, the Brigham Young-Hawaii men's team shut out Chaminade 9-0. Leon So'onalole, Jakub Huza and Jeffrey Rice all blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0.

» The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team improved to 19-0 by winning its 120th straight match yesterday, 9-0 over Chaminade in Laie.

Seasiders Tetyana Bula, Gurianna Korinihona and Natalie Rogers all won in singles by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Sea Warriors beaten at No. 9 Biola

Biola's four-run seventh inning was too much for Hawaii Pacific yesterday in a 6-5 Sea Warriors loss at La Mirada, Calif.

Kris Cook's pinch-hit, three-run home run was the key play in that inning for Biola, which is ranked No. 9 in the nation in the NAIA. It was the second home run of the inning.

HPU is now 20-15 and returns home today after eight games on the road.

Rainbow Wahine track team begins 12-day trip

The Hawaii women's track team kicks off a 12-day road trip with today's hammer throw at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.

A full field of events continues through the weekend at UCLA, while a few Wahine will move on to the Meet of Champions Sunday at Azusa Pacific.

Other events on the swing include the California Invitational, Multi Events at Azusa Pacific, the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, the Long Beach State Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays, which conclude competition April 17. Fifteen Wahine will make the trip.

Leslie part of Catalina canoe victory

Hawaii's George Leslie teamed with Australian Travis Grant to win last Sunday's Catalina Challenge one-man outrigger canoe relay race in record time.

Leslie and Grant went wire-to-wire in completing the 40-mile OC-1 relay event from Catalina to Dana Point, Calif., in 5 hours, 1 minute. The previous record of 5:12:22 was set by Hawaii's Walter Guild and Mike Judd in 1999.

Hearn signs with Brigham Young-Hawaii

Junior College All-American Brett Hearn signed a letter of intent to play water polo at Brigham Young-Hawaii, the school announced Tuesday.

Hearn led Merced College with 73 goals last season and was named to the NorCal First Team and Bay Valley League First Team. He's a 2002 graduate of Lemoore High School.
