Think you’re strong enough
to pull a truck for a laptop?

THINK you're a strong man or teen? Well, now is your chance to show off those bulging biceps. The 14th annual Hawaii's Strongest Man Competition is coming to the Blaisdell Center. For teenagers, see if you can beat last year's winner Sene Ma'afala, who will be returning to defend his title. The winner of the five-event competition will get a laptop computer. You don't have much time to practice, but if you can carry 185 pounds in each hand and walk a fair distance quickly, you'll be in shape for the Farmer's Walk event. Being able to pull a truck weighing no more than 10,000 pounds will also help in another event. Hey, it's only five tons. The adults who compete on April 17 will have to pull a truck weighing up to 30,000 pounds. Coordinator Malcolm Lutu said all the professional strong men will be there, including Phil Pfister, Odd Haugen and defending champ Jessie Marunde. Women are welcome to cheer on their favorite hunk. Winner of the men's competition gets $3,000. Hawaii's competition is a preliminary to the national strong man competition. Competition forms can be found at www.nastrongman.com, or call Lutu at 223-1925 for information. Teens should also contact Lutu ...

Don't forget mom

You may not have thought about it yet, but here's your reminder: Mother's day is coming up and it might be nice to treat her to a day vacation at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel. Just write, in 250 words or less, "Why Mom Would Love a Hawaii Vacation," and send your entry via e-mail to mom@waikikibeachcomberhotel.com or fax it to 931-3089. Entries must be received by April 30 and the winner will be notified before Mother's Day on May 8 ...

Congratulations
