HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Hughes comes through
for big Kahuku victory

The X factor left her mark last night.

Kamaile Hughes came through with three key free throws and four timely rebounds in the final minutes to help Kahuku stave off Kalaheo 49-44 at Thomas Walker Gym.

Aisha Ale powered the Lady Raiders with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kahuku and Kalaheo were even on the boards until the final quarter, when the Lady Raiders outrebounded the visitors 14-8. Nine of those caroms were on the offensive glass for Kahuku.

"Kamaile is feeling more confident and comfortable," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said of the 5-foot-11 softball standout. "She came out for basketball last year, but got hurt in tryouts."

Kalaheo gets another shot at Kahuku later thanks to the league's home-and-away schedule, but the loss smarts.

"The three things we want are to shoot a good field-goal percentage, a good free-throw percentage and keep the turnovers under 15," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "But we didn't do the job on all three. And with Kahuku, there's a fourth factor: You have to keep them off the offensive boards."

Each team shot 16-for-45 from the field, but Kahuku's 37-29 edge on the glass proved to be critical. So did Kalaheo's 36 percent free-throw accuracy (9-for-25).

Guard Artevia Wily added 10 points for Kahuku, which improved to 6-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play (12-2). Ranked No. 5 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, the Red Raiders now have sole possession of first place.

Kalaheo, ranked fourth, dropped to 4-1 in league play (11-4 overall).
