HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Buffanblu show no
rust in return

Punahou coach Mike Taylor is fond of creating easy opportunities for points and the Buffanblu girls basketball team executed his strategy flawlessly last night.

The top-ranked Buffanblu cruised to a 54-28 win over Mid-Pacific yesterday in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams.

"We really wanted to come out and give a lot of effort," Taylor said. "Everyone played with aggression and enthusiasm."

Punahou (10-1) showed no ill effects of a two-week break and found its flow pretty easily. The Buffanblu favor an up-tempo game and dictated the pace for four quarters. Punahou's depth made it easy for the Buffanblu to sub liberally the whole game. Taylor often replaced five players at a time.

Freshman Shawna Kuehu turned in a solid all-around performance with a double-double. Kuehu seemed to come up with the ball each time she stepped on the court and went coast-to-coast several times. Kuehu scored a game-high 12 points, hauled in 13 rebounds and had seven assists. Junior Sophie Merrifield added 10 points for the Buffanblu.

"She's so gifted athletically. She's a very humble, hardworking person. They both are," Taylor said of Kuehu and sister Shaena (six points).

The Buffanblu put together a 13-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters to race to a 24-8 lead.

"We were really excited to play," said senior guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay, who scored nine points. "It felt good to play against new faces and start the ILH season.

"Our defense can improve. We went out there and gave it our best effort."

The Buffanblu played without senior defensive standout Christine Takara for most of the game. Takara got tangled up and rolled her right ankle at the end of the first quarter.

The final score wasn't indicative of how close the game could have been.

Mid-Pac (5-4) didn't have much trouble breaking Punahou's press but couldn't get shots to fall. At least a dozen points rattled out in the second quarter and the Owls couldn't connect from close range.

Meghan Laughlin ended the scoring drought in the second quarter, but by then the damage was done as Punahou took a 30-12 halftime lead.

"We dug a grave," Owls coach Byron Cheng said. "That's a credit to their defense. They put enough pressure on us. I'm pleased with the way we broke the press. It was a matter of finishing. Punahou is real tough. A lot of times they limited us to one shot."

During one possession, the Buffanblu had three offensive rebounds before Ciana Aiwohi scored on the putback. Despite the margin of victory, Cheng was pleased with his team's effort.

"We were able to get good shots off," said the first-year Mid-Pac coach. "It was frustrating only because we just wanted it for the girls. They worked so hard. Everything was nice. The form is nice, decisions were nice. It's just not falling. It goes back to Punahou's defense."
