Maryknoll fund-raiser to feature 'Idol' Trias

A Maryknoll School fund-raising banquet this month will star one of the Catholic school's best-known graduates.

"An Evening with Jasmine Trias" will spotlight the Mililani teenager, whose appearance on the "American Idol" television talent show last year drew thousands of local people to vote for her.

The event at 5 p.m. April 24 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village will raise funds for construction of a $12 million community center and gymnasium at the school's Makiki campus. Tickets are $100 per individual. Sponsor tables are available at $1,000, $3,000 and $5,000.

Reservations may be made by calling the Maryknoll Office of Development at 952-7310, or e-mailing development-alumni@maryknollschool.org.

Jehovah's Witnesses hold yearly convention

Hawaii's Jehovah's Witnesses are gathering this weekend at their Mililani Assembly Hall for their annual district convention.

The three-day session is one of several special assemblies for members of the church, which has about 14,000 island members. The convention is held in increments, with different geographic divisions scheduled for succeeding weekends through May 29. Separate sessions are held for members who speak Japanese, Samoan, Korean and other languages.

"Pay Attention to How You Listen" is the theme of the event at the hall at 239 Palii St. in Mililani Technology Park. It is free and open to the public. For information, call 623-8332.

Authors to be honored as 'peace heroes'

Authors Gerald Jampolsky and Diane Cirincione, who teach that forgiveness is the key to peace of mind, will speak tomorrow at the closing event of the "Season for Peace and Nonviolence."

The 6 p.m. event at the National Bahai Center, 3264 Allen Place, is free and open to the public. Several local churches and organizations participate in the annual peace observance during the 64 days between the anniversaries of the assassinations of peace advocates Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.

The organizations will honor Jampolsky, a psychiatrist, and his wife, Cirincione, a clinical psychologist, as "peace heroes." The pair lives part of the year in Kailua and lecture nationwide on the power of an individual's attitude in relationships.

Jampolsky is the founder of the Center for Attitudinal Healing in Tiburon, Calif. He is the author of "Love Is Letting Go of Fear" and "Teach Only Love."

Health of caregivers is focus of workshop

Psychologist and author Robert Grant will return this month to present a workshop for people in religious ministry and health-care professions.

"Compassion Fatigue and Burnout" is the theme of the April 16 workshop. It will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mystical Rose Oratory at Chaminade University, 3140 Waialae Ave.

The workshop will show techniques for maintaining mental health and renewing psychic energy in these times when professional caregivers face multiplying regulations and restrictions.

April 11 is the registration deadline. Cost is $10 and includes a box lunch. Call Brother Dennis Schmitz, 735-4801. Registration forms are available at marianisthawaii.org.

Grant, of Oakland, Calif., has done extensive work with victims of natural disasters, as well as victims and perpetrators of abuse. He trains medical personnel and spiritual counselors who deal with trauma victims and has written several books.
