Zimet, Carey are MVPs of Haili Invitational

Former University of Hawaii volleyball players led their teams to titles at last week's 48th Haili Men's Club Invitational volleyball tournament in Hilo.

Ex-Warrior Eyal Zimet was named the MVP in helping the Kailua Volleyball Club White win the Open Division over Kailua Volleyball Club Blue. Other former UH players named to the all-tournament team were Delano Thomas (KVC White), Kimo Tuyay (KVC White) and Gavin Cook (KVC Blue).

Ex-Rainbow Wahine setter Jen Carey was named the MVP of the women's open division after leading Rusty Wahine to the championship. On the all-tournament team from Rusty Wahine were former UH players Melissa Villaroman and Heidi Ilustre.

Kopra named to USA Rugby's Under-19 team

Michael Kopra, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been selected to play on USA Rugby's Under-19 national team.

Kopra is scheduled to start at fullback for the USA Eagles, which will compete next month at the World Cup in Durban, South Africa.

U.S. Open golf qualifiers in Hawaii

Four qualifiers for the U.S. Open men's golf tournament (June 13-19 at Pinehurst, N.C) are in Hawaii in May.

The qualifiers are May 13 at Turtle Bay, May 14 at Kaanapali, May 19 at Poipu Bay and May 23 at Waikoloa.

One qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open (June 23-26 at Cherry Hills, Colo.) is planned for Hawaii on May 16 at Ko Olina.

Kaanapali swim meet is May 1

The Lahaina Swim Club's 21st annual Kaanapali Klassic Ocean Swim is scheduled for May 1 at 8:30 a.m.

The 1.2-mile race is open to all ages and is a fund-raiser to benefit the Lahaina Swim Club. The registration fee is $20 before April 25. Late registration is $25.

Masters track championships coming to UH

Nearly 2,000 entrants from around the world are expected to compete in the 2005 USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships, officials said yesterday. The meet will be held Aug. 4-7 at the University of Hawaii track.

Competition is in categories from ages 30 to 90 and above. For information, go to www.hawaiichamps.com.
