Star-Bulletin wins
15 Pa‘i awards
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin took home 15 awards, five of them for first place, at the 2005 Hawaii Publishers Association Pa'i Awards yesterday.
Winners in 33 categories were announced at the awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. Judges from the mainland selected winners for each category.
The Star-Bulletin took first place in Editorial Enterprise, Spot News Photography, Excellence in Illustration-Newsprint, Editorial Cartoon and Special Section Excellence.
The Honolulu Advertiser won 22 awards, 11 of them for first place. The Advertiser swept the Editorial Series and Feature Photography categories.
The Star-Bulletin's first-place winners were:
» Reporter Sally Apgar in the Editorial Enterprise category for a story on a federal investigation into the black-market sales of Hawaiian artifacts. The judges wrote, "A timely story about a subject controversial on many levels. Sally Apgar's piece both breaks the news about alleged sales of priceless artifacts and gives deep background on 150 years of artifact collection. The story opens a new angle of discussion on debates about race, culture and the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. A follow-up story, 'Place of unrest,' included details on the lack of security in caves where Hawaiian artifacts were reburied."
» Photographer FL Morris in the Spot News Photography category for a photo of a shooting that showed a covered body on a ledge of a Mayor Wright Homes unit in Kalihi with a police officer looking at the body through a window. The judges wrote, "Very gutsy photo as well as the decision to publish it. However, the image tells the story and shows an end result to neighborhood. It fits all the criteria for spot news because of the timing and ability to show an amazing composition. While the body (covered) immediately catches your eye, another glimpse shows the bullet hole in the window and emotion from the police officer's face. Though the photo will be hard to view for some readers, it's also responsible journalism."
» Graphic artist Kip Aoki in the Excellence in Illustration-Newsprint category for "Putting out the blaze." The judges wrote "Colorful, vibrant and fun. Creative concept for what could have been an 'ordinary layout.'"
» Cartoonist Corky Trinidad won in the Editorial Cartoon category for a cartoon of President Bush changing the Constitution to "We, the heterosexual people ... ." The judges wrote, "Cartoonist Trinidad's work has reached a texture and substance that brings art close to daily cartooning. With apologies to American portraitist Trumbull, Trinidad's cartoon of President Bush amending the Constitution is smart, funny and thought-provoking. It uses color and black and white to draw distinctions and focus the reader's eye toward the center of the cartoon."
» Assistant Editor Michael Rovner, photographer Richard Walker, reporter Dave Reardon and graphic artist Kip Aoki in the Special Section Excellence category for "QB." The judges wrote "This section is beautiful, well-written, well-designed and well-shot. Great job ... What else is there to say?"
