UH digs Glanville’s bag

THAT June Jones. What a genius! Making big news headlines just as Joe Public would ordinarily be thinking about putting the heat to Mike Trapasso. Brilliant. Now that's a team player.

It's true. He really is constantly thinking about the good of the entire school.

» Jerry Glanville!

» Sorry, I thought that name itself needed its own bullet point. Wow. This one is a shocker.

First, because when Kevin Lempa left, the hint was that defensive coordinator had been doing a little too much coordinating. And I don't think Glanville is going to come in to paint by numbers.

Second, this guy is a big enough personality to grab a few headlines of his own. Mouse Davis may be a bigger name in the history of football, but at least at this point of his career, Mouse doesn't have an ego. At last check, Glanville may have a couple.

And the camera is going to love this guy.

Let's face it, he's going to be fun.

Mike Cavanaugh was a character, but he was off on the side, with the O-line. Glanville's is the kind of showmanship that demands center stage.

Jones is still the star of the show, but now there's another name on the marquee.

And if it works, Glanville's going to get his share of the credit, too.

» Jones on Glanville: "I think the world of him."

I think anyone who has seen the NFL Films clip of Glanville telling an official, "This is the NFL. That stands for 'Not For Long' if you keep making calls like that. ... I'll be bagging groceries," feels the same way. I know I do.

» Of course, Jones stressed, nothing is official yet on this Glanville business. Partly because Jones is officially still making up his mind on which way to go with the open job. Partly because when you're dealing with hiring for state jobs there is a protocol.

"Law," Jones said yesterday at the Honolulu Quarterback Club. "You've got a law, it's there."

That has a ring to it.

» Speaking of officials, Hawaii high school football official of the year Matt Sumstine went on before Jones yesterday at the Quarterback Club. He started off his speech by asking, what if at your job, when you got something wrong someone came up to you, and, (yelling) "You need glasses! What are you looking at! My goodness, where did you come from? How on earth could I possibly get the worst guy in the world at this job!' And when you do something right: 'I've been telling you all game he's been doing it, you should have called it before! I don't know what you've been looking at ...!' "

That does happen in my job. From the same guy he's hearing it from, too.

» Sumstine said they're always looking for new officials. It's good to know I've got experience.

» Nike dressing UH. Sure, it sounds good. But those are the same guys that put BYU's football team in bibs and Oregon's in sweater vests.

» See, I told you, Jones' plan worked perfectly. We've made it all the way through this column without dwelling on Trapasso and the baseball 'Bows' maddening slide. In fact, I'm writing this earlier in the day, but I would imagine the most-asked question Trap got last night on his "Call the Coach" radio show was, "Hey! What do you think about Jerry Glanville?"

Of course, even if it did get rough, as Glanville himself told us there are worse questions coaches can be faced with in their lives.

Like "paper or plastic?"

» Last word today comes from a reader named Mark:

"(Bobby) Knight is not 'boorish.' He is intelligent and well-mannered (he only threw one chair, and that was a long time ago), and not likely to choke you, although some would perhaps say that you would deserve it after your hatchet job on him. I'd choose Knight for a friend before I'd choose you."

COMMENT: Good luck with that. I'll just say that I've never shot any of my friends while hunting. OK, only one friend, and that was a long time ago.
