Alleged assailant
requested directions

A Kaneohe man accused of sexually assaulting a female motorist in Manoa forced his way into her car after asking her for directions.

Police said Shannon K. Kalahiki, 24, reached through an open window and unlocked her front passenger door.

Kalahiki, of Puohala Street, made his first appearance in Honolulu District Court yesterday. He is being held on $75,000 bail.

Police charged him Saturday with kidnapping, first-degree sexual assault and robbery in the March 23 incident.

According to court documents, Kalahiki got into the woman's car, brandished a 4-inch serrated knife and ordered her to drive to the rear of Manoa School, where he allegedly demanded she perform a sexual act.

He let her go only after she gave him $100 that he made her withdraw from the First Hawaiian Bank automated teller machine at the Manoa Marketplace, police said.

The woman had just started her car, which was parked outside the Manoa Innovation Center on Woodlawn Drive, when she noticed a male, later identified as Kalahiki, walk past her car and then walk back toward her seeking directions. She had rolled down her windows after starting her car.

The woman reported the incident to police immediately after the attack, and fingerprints were lifted from her car. According to court papers, the fingerprints were identified as belonging to Kalahiki. Later, the woman identified Kalahiki in a photo lineup.

Kalahiki, who happened to be in police custody at the time on unrelated contempt-of-court violations, was arrested in the sexual assault.
