UH knocks off Long Beach State in water polo

Iefke Van Belkum skipped in a shot with 39 seconds left in the final period and No. 5 Hawaii handed No. 3 Long Beach State its first loss in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo with an 8-7 win yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Van Belkum and Monika Kruszona each had three goals for the Rainbow Wahine, who improved to 11-6 overall, 6-2 in the conference. Cassie Acevedo scored three goals and Drue Wawrzynski two for the 49ers (15-4, 7-1).

Hawaii trailed 7-6 when Van Belkum's second goal tied it with 2:11 left. The Beach had a chance to tie it with 10 seconds remaining, but UH goalie Meike De Nooy blocked the shot to preserve the win.

Rainbow Wahine softball team drops 2

Hawaii lost twice yesterday at the Stanford (Calif.) Invitational softball tournament, falling to No. 20 Northwestern 1-0 and UNLV 4-2.

In the first game, the Rainbow Wahine's Kate Robinson broke up Courtney Foster's perfect game with a single in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh Tyleen Tausaga singled for Hawaii's only other hit.

Tausaga led the Wahine with two hits in the second game. The Rebels scored twice in the sixth to break a 2-all tie and hand UH its third straight loss.

Hawaii (19-17) finishes tournament play today against St. Mary's (Calif.).

» Lisa Jackson went 5-for-7 and drove in six runs over two games to lead Hawaii-Hilo to an 11-1 and 6-2 softball sweep of Chaminade at the UHH Softball Field yesterday.

In the first game, the Vulcans scored eight runs in the second inning as Jackson came to the plate twice and hit a solo home run and a three-run double.

The Vulcans' Sarah Steele struck out seven and allowed just two hits, including one to Pua Reis, who hit a solo home run for Chaminade's only score.

Britni Rodriguez struck out 11 and Jackson hit another homer in the second win for Hilo (20-2, 9-1 Pacific West). Carolyn Fisher led the Silverswords (8-21, 2-6) with a hit and an RBI.

» Two PacWest doubleheaders rained out on Oahu yesterday will be made up today.

Montana State-Billings (13-7, 0-2) and Hawaii Pacific (22-8, 7-2) play at Kailua High School at 10 a.m. Western New Mexico (16-11, 2-4) plays at Brigham Young-Hawaii (12-16, 4-6) at noon.

Record-setting day for Rainbow Wahine

Three members of the Hawaii track and field team qualified for today's finals at the 31st Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, Calif.

In the preliminaries yesterday, Kelly Young broke the meet record in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 30.43 seconds. Dana Buchanan posted the third-best time in the 800 at 2:11.74, breaking the previous meet record of 2:12.53 along with four other runners.

Junior Novelle Murray qualified for the finals in the hammer throw by posting the day's best mark at 51.15 meters.

UH freshman Meghan Weaver placed sixth in the hammer throw (45.71 meters) and junior Tasha Monroe finished 14th in the 100 meters (12.29 seconds) and seventh in the long jump (5.78 meters).

Ching and Lim eliminated from nationals

Tennis players Holden Ching and Michael Lim of Hawaii were both eliminated from the USTA Spring National Championships in Mobile, Ala., yesterday.

Ching advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over David Rosenfeld, but later lost to North Carolina's Christopher Cloer 6-3, 6-3.

Lim defeated Sami Belakhlef 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), but was eliminated from the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Sasha Ermakov.
