‘Uncle’ didn’t pin on Crissy’s
eagles but she was promoted

Hawaii's Christine "Crissy" Gayagas was promoted to colonel March 4 at Fort Hood, TX. Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz, III Corps commander, pinned the eagles on Crissy. It wasn't exactly how her dad, retired Col. Ed Gayagas had hoped it would happen but he is beaming and is very proud of his daughter. Ed had hoped that his island buddy and Crissy's calabash uncle, retired Col. Billy Olds, would do the honors in Iraq where she was serving and Billy is working as a civilian. But it didn't work out. Crissy is a West Point grad and it took her just 20 years to make colonel. Ed said it took both him and Billy 23 years to get their eagles. She's home on leave. Ed sent word they went to Kauai, his home isle, for some "tubing down the ditch" ...

Former Trappers' manager Mai Tai Sing has lined up former Trapperettes and bartenders to join her at the club's old site in the Hyatt Waikiki at 9:30 p.m. Friday. The session with Jimmy Borges and the Rich Crandall Trio is part of the Hawaii International Jazz Festival. It follows the festival's Swingtime in Hawaii show that starts at 8 in the hotel's ballroom. Trapperettes Christie Burton of L.A., Katie Johnson of Washington state, Jacci Buccieri of Oregon, Cheryl Lopes of the Big Isle and Oahu's Carolyn Taum, Liz Hodson, Joann Aramaki and hostess Kelly Ahu will show up to enjoy, not work. Bartenders to show are John Morita and Les Hong. Janina Chung is coming from Massachusetts. She worked as an assistant manager for Mai Tai ...

B.J. Whitman is no longer with Sheraton Public Relations after many years there. Candice Kraughto of Stryker Weiner & Yokota is now the P.R. manager for Sheraton Hotels and Resorts in Waikiki. She comes to the P.R. firm from Gov. Linda Lingle's staff. Candice also was with Hawaii Pacific U. and prior to that was a member of Sam Choy's team ...

Former islander worked on Oscar-winning film

C. Robert Holloway, who staged productions here 35 ago, is vacationing in the isles. Robert is into film design and writing. He was part of the production team of 2003's "Two Soldiers," based on a William Faulkner story, that won the Short-Live Action Academy Award. His first novel, "The Unauthorized Letters of Oscar Wilde," won the Hemingway First Novel competition in 1997 ...
