ILH tightens up after
Iolani ties Punahou

The marathon known as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball season took a wacky turn for top-ranked Punahou and arch rival Iolani yesterday.

Iolani rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the game at 5-all, and the teams went scoreless through three extra innings for a tie yesterday.

The game, which began at 3:45 p.m., was called at 6:41 due to darkness. With the league's two state-tournament berths decided strictly by regular-season records, a tie could be the slimmest of differences by the end of ILH play.

"We battled back, just like against Saint Louis," Iolani coach Dean Yonamine said. "That was a tremendous job of sticking with it."

Punahou is now 2-0-1 in ILH play (15-1-1 overall). Landon Nakata went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Kasey Ko belted a two-run home run to pace the Buffanblu.

"It's Iolani, and it's always tough to beat them on their home field. You gotta give them credit for having guts," Punahou coach Eric Kadooka said. "I wish we could have home games on our field, too."

Buffanblu starting pitcher Carl Graves, a right-hander, allowed one hit in four innings, allowing one run. He struck out two and walked two. Nakata, the third pitcher, went 5 2/3 innings. He permitted just two hits, and all three runs during his stint were unearned. He fanned five and walked one.

"Carl pitched well. Landon stepped up for his teammates," Kadooka said. "We had plenty of chances, but our at-bats in the last three innings weren't quality."

Iolani is 1-1-1 (11-4-1 overall). Chris Johnson was excellent in relief, allowing one run and two hits in five innings. He whiffed four batters and walked one.

Raiders right fielder Greg Hackler turned in the defensive play of the game in the top of the fifth, throwing out Nakata at home plate for a double play. Catcher Riley Yamamoto took the brunt of the collision and held on, providing what turned out to be a huge play.

Iolani trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, when Kyson Morikuni and Jarvis Nohara reached base on errors by shortstop Steven Dannaway. Marc Factora's single brought in Morikuni, and a fielder's choice groundout by Johnson brought home Nohara to make it 5-4 with two outs.

Johnson advanced to second on a single by Brett Hasegawa and came up with a crucial play. Johnson took off for third base, and Punahou catcher Michael Chock's throw caromed off the bat of Iolani's Mike Hirokawa, who was standing motionless in the box. Johnson scored on the play to tie the game at 5.

"CJ's not a base stealer, but he saw an opportunity," Yonamine said.
