Art-filled trek to Japan

TEMARI is hosting a Mingei (folk craft) study tour to Japan from May 12 to 24, in keeping with its mission to perpetuate Asian-Pacific arts.

Merle Grybowski will be the tour leader, assisted by TEMARI board member Francesca Passalacqua, who has lived in Japan studying kabuki and textile arts.

The tour takes advantage of TEMARI's many years of contacts with artists, teachers and business owners, who offered tips for studio visits and shopping sites off the beaten path.

The itinerary with stops in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and several destinations en route, will give a broad overview of various folk craft arts. The approximate cost is $2,800.

For details, call 536-4566.

'Biggest losers' sought

Producers of NBC's hit reality show "The Biggest Loser" are looking for candidates for new episodes of the competitive weight-loss program that challenges overweight contestants to undergo radical physical makeovers in a safe and recommended manner through comprehensive diet and exercise.

New themed stand-alone episodes will pit town vs. town, family vs. family, bride vs. bride, co-workers vs. co-workers, and more.

Auditions take place Wednesday at Don Ho's Island Grill at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Producers will be looking for families with kids (ages 13 to 22) who live under the same roof, and engaged couples who want to lose weight as a team and have inspiring stories to tell about their journey.

Participants must be committed to make a change together. Qualifying participants will get a meal plan, the services of a personal trainer, and a new way of life for 10 weeks, including two weeks in Los Angeles. Participants will also be competing with other groups for a grand prize.

Call Hawaii Pacific Entertainment at 391-7441 or 947-3101 for more information, or e-mail linc@lava.net for more information, including application forms and audition availability.
