HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Miyashiro helps
Roosevelt recover

Shannon Miyashiro scored 16 points to lead Roosevelt over McKinley 37-31 last night at the Rough Riders' gym.

Roosevelt, continuing to improve despite the absence of two key starters, is 1-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division play (8-5 overall). McKinley is 1-1 (8-5 overall).

Miyashiro, a 5-foot-8 junior, was one of three starters to miss playing time recently. Still recovering from the flu, she was unmatched inside by the smaller Lady Tigers, especially after McKinley center Linda Fowler picked up her third foul in the first quarter and sat most of the way.

Senior guard Chelsie Kadota held down the fort, adding nine points. Roosevelt shot 47 percent from the field (16 of 34).

Christine Ching led McKinley with nine points. Chelsie Sato added eight points and eight rebounds. The Lady Tigers outrebounded Roosevelt 30-19, but turned the ball over 17 times against the Rough Riders' mix of half-court traps and 2-3 zone. McKinley shot 31 percent from the field (12 of 39), including 19 percent from the arc (three of 16).

Spark plugs like Kayleen Ka'aiai and Dianna Zane helped Roosevelt handle McKinley's deliberate tempo.

"We're getting more experience, especially our freshmen," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "They're getting more minutes. McKinley played incredibly well. They forced us to slow down."

Miyashiro led Roosevelt under the boards with five rebounds.

"She's still getting back in condition. The slower tempo helped her. I didn't have to pull her out as much as I expected," Keanini said.

Early turnovers stifled McKinley's offense early on. Still, the Lady Tigers were within 6-4 shortly before the end of the first quarter.

From that point, however, Miyashiro and Kadota were tough from the low post and perimeter. In addition, Ka'aiai provided an extra spark. While Miyashiro scored on back-to-back post plays, Ka'aiai took a steal and fed Kadota for a layup. Ka'aiai then hit a 3-pointer from the left corner as Roosevelt took a 17-4 lead midway through the second quarter.

By intermission, Miyashiro had eight points and Kadota seven. The Rough Riders shot 47 percent from the field (nine of 19) and had just four turnovers. McKinley made only three of its 19 field-goal tries (16 percent), missing all eight 3-point attempts.

The Lady Tigers had 11 first-half turnovers.

The Rough Riders extended the lead to 18 on Miyashiro's turnaround jumper in the key to start the fourth quarter. McKinley chipped away, pulling within 35-24 on Fowler's post basket with 6 minutes left. A putback by freshman Pearly Togiai and a 3-pointer by Ching brought the Lady Tigers within 37-29 with 49 seconds left.

McKinley couldn't get another shot up, however, until Ching hit a baseline jumper with 9 seconds to go.

Note: The game was originally scheduled at McKinley Student Council Gym. Renovation at McKinley's weight room, however, turned the gym into a temporary storage area, and the game was moved to Roosevelt at the last minute.
