Pate no-hits WarriorsIn the 21-game, knock-down, drag-out affair that is the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball season, there are many battles to be won before a team can win the war, and with it, one of the league's precious two state tournament berths. Senior right-hander Jared Pate helped Punahou move a step closer to raising its flag yesterday, tossing a no-hitter against rival Kamehameha to spur the Buffanblu to an 11-0 win in a game shortened to five innings at Ala Wai Field. "Actually, I had no idea I even had a no-hitter until after the game," Pate said. "This feels good coming into this season like this. Kamehameha has a really good program, I think they're like fifth in the state poll (fourth, actually). This is a good start for our whole program." Pate's no-hit bid was threatened most in the top of the first. After hitting leadoff batter Jayson Rego with a first-pitch curveball, Pate retired mound counterpart David Parrow on a flyout to center. Pate then walked Kamehameha right fielder Nick Freitas to give the Warriors runners at first and second. Stuart Kam followed by drilling a line drive toward the left side of the infield. But Kam's shot was snagged by Punahou second baseman Maika Murashige, who calmly jogged over to second to double off Rego, who was stealing on the pitch. From there, Pate faced 14 batters -- two over the minimum -- as an infield error and two more hit batsmen accounted for the Warrior base runners. Pate struck out only two, but was backed by a Buffanblu defense that turned a pair of double plays in his support. "We had a good defensive effort," Punahou head coach Eric Kadooka said. "We had some luck with our defensive positioning and we made most of the plays. Kamehameha's going to be better. They had their song festival last night and this was just their first game." Punahou's offensive attack remained white-hot, touching Warrior ace Parrow for 11 runs -- five earned -- on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Eight of the hits Parrow allowed were singles, including four infield hits. In two wins against the Warriors and Damien this weekend, Punahou scored 22 runs and tallied 25 hits. "I think we were really hoping to come out banging this year," Pate said. "Last year we got off to a slow start and had to play well late to get the second spot in the playoffs." The Buffanblu didn't wait long to score, as they took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with RBI singles by Kasey Ko and Paul Shieder and a wild pitch accounting for the scoring. Punahou scored two more in the second and third innings, with junior designated hitter Bucky Aona recording run-scoring singles in both frames. Aona also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field in the second inning. Four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth sealed Kamehameha's fate. A two-out infield error on a routine throw opened the door for a four-run Punahou rally. Punahou continues its ILH season on Tuesday with an afternoon game at Iolani. Kamehameha plays Damien at Ala Wai Field. "This was a good win for us," Kadooka said. "Kamehameha's always our measuring stick and they just had an off-day. We were just fortunate to be able to get on top of them early."
