HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Simanu, Taituave lead
Kapolei past Pearl City

Becka Simanu scored 13 points and corralled 12 rebounds to power Kapolei over Pearl City 41-35 last night at the Hurricanes' gym.

Kapolei improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division. Pearl City slipped to 1-1.

Simanu, a junior forward, and center Jerrell Taituave patrolled the paint effectively from the start. Though Kapolei only outrebounded Pearl City 26-24, Taituave blocked six shots. Kayla Kam added 11 points for the Hurricanes.

Pearl City center Mele Laulea led her team with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Jazmin Pahukoa-Malia added nine points for the Lady Chargers, who shot 36 percent from the field (14-for-39) and 36 percent from the free-throw line (5-for-14).

Twenty-six turnovers derailed Pearl City.

"We're learning," coach Mike Morton said of his young team. "We just can't give up. We just have to handle the ball."

Kapolei's mix of full-court and half-court traps paralyzed Pearl City at times.

"But we were ready for their pressure," Morton said.

The Hurricanes got sloppy in the second half, when they committed 14 of their 20 turnovers.

Kapolei stormed to a 9-3 lead, thanks to six quick points by Charmaine Jackson. The Hurricanes' full-court pressure slowed the Lady Chargers, but the visitors still found a way to pull within three at 11-8 on two inside buckets by Laulea.

Taituave, however, got the best of Laulea in the paint. She blocked three shots in the opening quarter to establish control. Kam, a 5-foot-5 senior, scored on a reverse layup and another inside basket to spark an 8-1 run by the 'Canes to start the second quarter.

Taituave sat the final 3:55 of the first half, but Kapolei led 24-13 at the break. The 6-foot senior sat 6 minutes in all before halftime, but had six points and four blocks. Kam also had six points.

Pearl City amassed 12 turnovers by intermission, shooting just 33 percent (5-for-15) from the field.

Turnovers plagued both teams in the third quarter, but Pearl City cut the lead to 24-17 on baskets by Laulea and Pahukoa-Malia.

Kapolei responded with a 15-5 run to put the game out of reach. Simanu was a force during the blitz, scoring six points and controlling the boards with her 5-10 frame. The Hurricanes led 39-22 with 3:24 left.

Pearl City didn't quit, though. The Lady Chargers chipped away until the margin was in single digits, and when Simanu missed a layup with 14 seconds left, 'Canes coach Jesse Baugh called another timeout.

Taking shots after he had ordered them to eat the clock isn't a good thing, they learned.

The Lady Chargers pulled within 41-35 after a free throw by Crystal Tadeo with 9 seconds left, but got no closer.
