Cornell's Lee advances to NCAA wrestling final

Cornell University senior Travis Lee won two matches yesterday and advanced to today's 133-pound final of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Savvis Center in St. Louis.

Lee, a former high school star at Saint Louis School, beat Boise State's Scott Jorgensen 9-3 in the quarterfinals and then defeated Wisconsin's Tom Clum by fall at 2:55 of the first period in the semifinals.

Lee meets Shawn Bunch of Edinboro (Pa.) in today's championship match. Both wrestlers have one loss this year -- to each other.

When Lee and Bunch were freshmen, they faced each other in one of the most exciting NCAA matches that year, with Lee prevailing in the consolation bracket.

Lee, a three-time All-American, won the 125-pound title in 2003.

Huang fourth in 3-meter nationals

University of Hawaii's QiongJie Huang placed fourth in the 3-meter diving finals in the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday in West Lafayette, Ind.

Huang, who won the 1-meter national championship on Thursday, earned All-America status in the 3-meter event along with teammate Rui Wang, who placed sixth. It was Huang's fifth All-America honor over the past two seasons.

The Rainbow Wahine's 800 freestyle relay team of Yan Chen, Nicole Mackey, Melanie Schlanger and Cassie Hunt finished 16th.

Gibbons takes national semifinal bout

One of three Hawaii boxers won yesterday in the semifinals of the U.S. Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Amanda Gibbons, who is also a local sailor, won her 189-pound semifinal bout with a second-round knockout of Taniqueka Harvey.

Adri Harding of San Diego topped Mililani's Colleen Loo 3-0 in the women's 101-pound class.

In the men's 178-pound class, Brandon Gonzalez of San Jose, Calif., won a 21-12 decision over Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks.

Sea Warriors roll over Blue Devils twice

Hawaii Pacific defeated Wisconsin-Stout twice yesterday in nonconference collegiate softball at Sea Warrior Field in Kaneohe.

Brandi Peiler went the distance in a mercy-rule shortened second game, hurling a four-hitter in the Sea Warriors' 11-0 victory. Peiler improved to 7-1.

Dayna Berry hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Hawaii Pacific (17-7) offense.

In the first game, Berry took the mound and gave up four Blue Devils (1-7) hits in seven innings in a 7-1 win.

Seasiders blank Silverswords

Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 9-0 to extend its NCAA II record winning streak to 111 women's tennis matches.

Adriennn Hegedus, Tetyana Bula, Petra Teller, Gurianna Korinihona, Crystal Schwenke and Natalie Rogers all won singles and doubles matches for the Seasiders (10-0).

» Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 9-0 in men's tennis yesterday in Laie.

No. 24 Dillon Porter didn't lose a set in two matches for the Seasiders (11-1). He topped the Silverswords' Brett Brown 6-0, 6-0 in singles and teamed with Junyoung Kim for a victory in doubles, too.

Dacanay is Hawaii's Gatorade player of year

Punahou senior point guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay is the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

The 5-foot-3 Dacanay was the MVP of the Kalaheo preseason tournament and has led the Buffanblu to a No. 1-state ranking. The team opens its regular season April 6 at Mid-Pacific.

A year ago, she led the Buffanblu to a third-place finish at the state tournament and finished the season with averages of 11.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.6 steals.

» Seventeen local high school basketball players are semifinalists for the McDonald's All-American Basketball Teams.

The boys and girls nominees are: Campbell's Tristan Bailey; Iolani's Kyle Pape; Kalaheo's Taylor Smith; Kaiser's Nikki Lehner; Kamehameha-Hawaii's Leilani Galdones; Kealakehe's Ioane Spencer; Konawaena's Jessica Hanato, Hina Kimitete and T.J. Akina; Maryknoll's Jessica Akamine; Hilo's Lynelle Paranada and Aukai Wong; Mid-Pacific's Jasmine Vieira; Punahou's Dacanay and Christine Takara; Saint Louis' Jack Miller; and Waianae's Xiro Naovalath.
