HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Kahuku opens OIA
with a win

It was opening night in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division, but last night's girls basketball matchup between Kaiser and No. 4 Kahuku felt more like a playoff game.

Juniors Camilla Ah-Hoy and Artevia Wily combined for 29 second-half points, with Wily converting three critical free throws in the final 23 seconds, to help the Red Raiders escape with a 66-60 win over the host Cougars.

Ah-Hoy finished with a game-high 21 points, but it was three 3-pointers in a three minute stretch late in the third quarter that helped the Red Raiders earn a hard-fought victory in the regular-season opener for both teams.

"(Kaiser) is a tough team, and this gives us a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season knowing we can win here," Ah-Hoy said.

Undeterred by the home crowd, the Red Raiders opened the game with an 11-2 run against a Kaiser team that had lost its past two games in heartbreaking fashion -- a double-overtime loss to Kamehameha, and an overtime loss to Lahainaluna on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

But buoyed by the return of Kilioe Aliifua from a trip to the mainland, the Cougars were able to respond, outscoring Kahuku 28-17 the rest of the half.

Taking advantage of multiple fast-break layups, Sharde Pratt scored eight points in the second quarter, including six as part of a 12-0 run that gave the Cougars a two-point halftime lead.

"We weren't getting back on defense at all," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said. "We were walking back and they were sprinting back and there just wasn't any intensity on our part."

Responding to their coaches criticism at halftime, Kahuku managed to gain the lead in the third quarter behind Ah-Hoy and Wily, who each had nine points in the period.

Nicole Lehner converted a four-point play for Kaiser, after being fouled on a 3-pointer, to tie the game at 49. However, a foul at the buzzer allowed Kahuku's Tina Soliai to sink two free throws to give Kahuku a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

"Coach got on us to pick it up and that our defensive transition was really slow," Wily said. "We had to be more aggressive and attack the boards because we were too relaxed in the first half."

Kaiser managed to keep within striking distance, but five missed free throws. Two costly turnovers late helped seal their fate.

"I was very proud with our effort, I thought we really played well," Cougars coach Lisa Mann said. "It's good to start out with a team like Kahuku to see how we match up against the competition."

Aiifua led the Cougars with 19 points, and was a welcome sight for her head coach. Aiifua had missed Kaiser's last two games.

"It's definitely nice to get her back," Mann said. "Her confidence level is so high right now and she really played well for us."
