Hawaii-Hilo's Mason medals at SCICHawaii-Hilo's Nick Mason earned medalist honors to lead the Vulcans to a share of second place at the 55th Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championships last week at Del Mar, Calif.Mason's final-round 67 was just two shots shy of The Santaluz Club course record held by PGA Tour member Scott Simpson. Mason finished with a 54-hole total of 211, four shots ahead of the field. The Vulcans shared second place with Chico State at 885. Cal State Bakersfield won the 15-team tournament with an 869. » Brigham Young University's Mark Neider shot an even-par 72 yesterday to claim medalist honors in a three-team match at Olomana Golf Course. The Seasiders finished second with a 311, behind Hawaii Pacific's 298. Chaminade was third at 400.
Rainbow Wahine tip Wolf Pack in WAC openerHawaii scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning last night to edge Nevada 5-4 in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Nevada came back to win the second game 3-1.The opening-game victory gave Hawaii coach Bob Coolen his 498th career win. Hawaii took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Tyleen Tausaga's two-run homer to center. The Wolf Pack regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth only to have the Wahine come back to win when Ashley Ruff scored on a wild pitch and Noelle Izumi scored on Kate Robinson's sacrifice fly to left. Hawaii (14-11, 1-0) meets Nevada (8-14, 0-1) again in a single game at 6 tonight. » Brooke Hilton scattered seven hits and Mandy Kirkham went 3-for-3 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii (5-13) to a 4-1 win and a split in a softball doubleheader against Georgia College (11-7) yesterday in Laie. Jenna Kubesch pitched a one-hitter in the opener, leading the Bobcats to a 3-1 victory.
Vulcans, Golden Bears in 4-game seriesHawaii-Hilo ends its home season with a four-game baseball series this weekend against California at Wong Stadium.The Vulcans (1-27) and Golden Bears (12-8) open with a 6 p.m. game Friday, then are scheduled for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest Sunday. Outfielder Sean Tamura, infielders Johnny Dudoit and Gary Ahu, Jr., and pitchers Danny Vitro, John Matson and Marc Caviglia celebrate senior day on Sunday. » Pinch hitter Bryan Daguio singled home Alika Kuraoka in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Hawaii Pacific a 9-8 victory and a doubleheader sweep of Lander (S.C.) on Sunday at Aloha Stadium. The Sea Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra frames. In the opener, Hawaii Pacific (12-8) scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on three errors by the Bearcats (18-8) to rally from a 7-6 deficit for a 10-6 victory. Grandon Costa drove in two runs and hit a double and triple for the Sea Warriors in the first game. Hawaii Pacific won the six-game series 4-2.
