Impressions
of Hawaii
Earlier this month, the Hawaii State Art Museum opened its newest exhibition, "Reflecting Hawaii," a showcase of two-dimensional painting and works on paper by 27 local artists. The exhibit displays recent art acquisitions and photography from the Art in Public Places Collection. Each work reveals through artistic eyes the beauty of our island home.
"Reflecting Hawaii" offers a mix of some of Hawaii's best-known artists. As usual, Ka-Ning Fong evokes a sense of familiarity, and Cora Yee is bold, vibrant and playful. Wayne Levin's photograph of a school of akule is a dramatic play of light, shadow and movement.
The roster of artists include: Kanani Au, Carol Bennett, Fabienne Blanc, Budd Brooks, Evelyn de Buhr, Barry Chann, Muriel Fujii, Francis Haar, Mark Kadota, Robin Kaye, Bradley Koki, Mary Ann Lynch, Mark Maresca, Pat Masumoto, Frederick L. Morris, Vicki Penney-Rohner, Wanda Russell, Mari Sakamoto, Franco Salmoiraghi, Norman Shapiro, Stanley Tomita, Brett A. Uprichard and Eric Yanagi.
"Reflecting Hawaii" runs through Sept. 3. The Hawaii State Art Museum, at 250 South Hotel St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. Admission is free. Call 586-0900.
