A Parade of names
and salaries

Three Hawaii entrepreneurs are pictured in the annual "What People Earn" cover story in today's Parade magazine inside the Star-Bulletin.

Hawaii Doggie Bakery LLC founder Jen Kunishima is on the cover; Coscina Brothers Coffee Co. co-owner Alfred Coscina is on Page 6 and Rosehill & Associates President Linda Rosehill is on Page 8. Their salaries of $150,000, $50,000 and $215,000, respectively, are in small captions beneath their photos.

"Somebody had given them my name," said Coscina, whose other, older company is Daga Restaurant Ware Ltd. It offers custom glass and ceramic decorating for restaurants, hotels and events.

Coscina got into the coffee brokering, roasting and wholesaling business as sort of an offshoot of the other business, after a friend asked for his help demonstrating espresso machines at a trade show.

Kunishima thought the magazine found her through the Hawaii Women's Business Center, but Coscina said he gave the magazine her name. She operates three Hawaii Doggie Bakery & Gift Shop locations and a newer store, Cottage By The Sea, which sells home furnishings, clothing and jewelry -- "for people," she laughed. The dollar amount looks like a lot, but Kunishima said, "in retail you turn everything back around into inventory."

She jumped at the opportunity to be in the magazine, as she had been inspired by a similar Parade story after graduating from law school six years ago. "It was one of those things that was a catalyst for me to think about doing something different -- to take a risk, to follow a dream."

Rosehill was referred to the magazine by retailer Maile Meyer, founder of Na Mea Hawaii.

"They had been looking for a Hawaiian woman business owner," Rosehill said. Educated as an attorney, her company provides community, government and public affairs consulting services.

Concerns about having her salary figure published were outweighed by the chance to be a positive role model. "It's a good thing to see a part-Hawaiian business woman that does fairly well," she said.
