St. Patrick's dance

As a warm-up to St. Patrick's Day, the Friends of St. Patrick invites the Irish and Irish-at-heart to a scholarship fund-raiser 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at Planet Hollywood.

The fund assists first-year undergraduate students from Hawaii as well as Ireland. The evening begins with cocktails followed by dinner and a silent auction. After dinner, dance to classic rock 'n' roll.

Cost is $50 at the door. Call Ian Wilson at 738-5155 to purchase reserved seating in advance.

Looking for a Diva

Miss Diva Polynesia of 2005 competition will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii's Manoa Grand Ballroom.

This year's beauty and talent competition for transgendered people is a tribute to the Glade.

The event is a benefit for Kulia Na Mamo, a nonprofit agency providing HIV prevention, substance abuse programs and social services for disenfranchised people in Hawaii. Kulia helps Hawaii's transgendered population with peer counselors.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $30, $50 and $100.

Calling "Valtor"

Casting for the comedy film "Valtor the Great vs. the Universe" will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Pacific Focus, 1013 Kawaiahao St.

The title character is described as having "traveled the universe joining the ranks of some of the greatest intergalactic armies the universe has ever seen ... all for the sake of a cause."

Casting is for the following roles:

» Valtor the Great: Look 15 to 18 years old; conqueror of the universe/leader/lover of fights.

» Dark Leader: Look 15 to 18; Valtor's arch nemesis. A confident fighter who won't stop until he stops Valtor.

» Alison: Look 18 to 20; beautiful and classy leader/space fighter. The only person capable of handling Valtor and Dark Leader.

» MIT: 15 to 17; named after the famous Earth college. He's a whiz, a genius and knows all of NASA's weaknesses.

» Greg: 15-17; depressed, confused and caught in between the battle.

» Big Guys: Weightlifters or tall, wearing biker helmets. No lines.

» Valtor's mom: 30 to 40; challenges Valtor's beliefs with her rules. She also holds a secret.

The short movie will shoot three days in April or May.

Slammin' Sunday

Revolution Books presents the Hawai'i Poetry Slam Team at 3 p.m. Sunday during its free monthly "2nd Sunday" event.

TravisT, Melvin, Kealoha and Selah will deliver an hour of their hottest individual and team pieces, followed by an informal discussion about their art form.

The monthly event, featuring a local author, poet or artist, is geared toward understanding the role of culture in social change.

TAG auditions set

The Actors Group will be hosting auditions for the world premiere of Ed Pickard's "Like a Bird" at 7 p.m. March 25 and 1 p.m. March 26 and 27 at the Yellow Brick Studio, 625 Keawe St.

David C. Farmer will direct the story of love and art, involving an artist consumed in a private world of consciousness, of space and forms, colors and shapes. Unable to function by social norms, he faces confinement to a mental institution. Forced to a decision, his wife holds his destiny in her hands and in her heart.

Needed are four actors:

» Two males, age 40 to 50.

» One female, about 40 to 45.

» One male, 30 to 40.

Auditions will consist of reading from the script and improvisational movement. For information, call Farmer at 222-3133.

Orchid show

The Kunia Orchid Society presents its annual Orchid Show March 18 to 20, celebrating its 51st year.

Time your entrance because the lucky 2005th visitor will be awarded a basketful of blooming orchids. Hourly door prizes will also be part of the fun.

The show at Del Monte Kunia Gymnasium offers the largest selection of honohono orchids, phalaenopsis, cattleyas, dendrobiums, miniatures and Nobile orchids for display and sale. Other sale items include anthuriums and other tropical plants.

Eight local clubs will come together to present an array of floor displays and ikebana display as well.

Special events include lectures at 1 p.m. March 18 by Edwin Oka on general orchid culture; 11 a.m. March 19 by Connie Yoshioka of the Sogetsu Hawaii Branch; and 1 p.m. March 20 by Kean Matsumoto on honohono culture.

Bonsai exhibit

Get set for the Bonsai Exhibit and Plant Sale being held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at Aiea Elementary School. The free event will offer some of Hawaii's finest bonsai for show and sale, with the opportunity to purchase pre-bonsai, stock materials, bonsai-related items, and house and garden plants directly from private collections.

The club will also provide a bonsai advisory clinic. Call 262-5873 for more information.
