Dick Kenney, 59, on Feb. 23, brought back memories to Star-Bulletin sportswriter
Dave Reardon. Dave had had hopes of becoming a professional athlete when, as a sophomore at Pearl City High, Dick cut him from the JV baseball team after one week. "I wasn't very good at it anyway," Dave said, "so I went out and ran track. I was decent at that. It also made me realize I was never going to become a pro athlete. So I put my energy toward the next best thing -- or so I thought -- to becoming a sportswriter" ...
A invitational showing of "The Land Has Eyes," a film about Pacific islanders written and directed by Vilsoni Hereniko, takes place tomorrow at Dole Theatres. Audy Kimura composed much of the music score. The film won an award at the Sundance Film Festival and has been shown in major American and international cities. It opens to the public at Dole on Friday ... Dr. Norm Goldstein was honored as Laureate of the American College of Physicians in Hawaii on Saturday at the Hawaii Prince. Norm is the first dermatologist to win the award. Next month, he'll again be honored at the national ACP meeting in San Francisco. Norm and his artist wife, Ramsay, celebrated 25 years of marriage on Valentine's Day ...
La Pietra's Hoopla has a Hollywood theme

Visitors to the Academy of Art's "The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia" exhibition will be treated to real rice paddy production. Floral designer Brian Choy has created his own rice paddies and has crops of rice in various stages of growth in the courtyards. The mini paddies are situated near the waterfall in the Luce Pavilion Complex. Choy wears a shirt made from a Cal-Rose rice bag while he tends to his crops. Old-timers will remember when some islanders wore articles of clothing made out of rice bags. The exhibit runs through April 24 ...
