To market in MililaniThe Saturday Farmers' Market opens in Mililani this weekend, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Mililani High School parking lot.More than two-dozen vendors will participate every week in the third of the Hawaii Farm Bureau's markets on Oahu. Several of the vendors will make the drive to Mililani directly from the Kapiolani Community College morning market. The markets feature only Hawaii-grown fruits, vegetables, flowers and beef products. The Mililani High School Future Farmers of America chapter will sell produce grown and harvested on campus. Prepared foods from small local companies, including preserves, sauces, salad dressings, baked goods and goat cheese, will also be offered. The Farm Bureau's other market are at KCC, 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays; and the Kailua night market, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Kailua Town Center parking garage. The Mililani market is co-sponsored by the high school. Call 848-2074.
A 'little' celebrationThe Honolulu Weekly pays tribute to "little kitchens," next Wednesday in a benefit for Slow Food Oahu and Oahu Schoolyard Edible Gardens"Little Kitchens Big Flavors" will feature Honolulu's smaller restaurants -- including C&C Pasta Co., Green Door, Honolulu Chocolate Co., Indigo, Olive Tree, Ono Pono Vegetarian Grinds, Nico's, Town and 12th Avenue Grill, as well as La Gelateria and Y. Hata. Sample their wares at the State Art Museum, 250 S. Hotel St., from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Drinks will be provided by Fujioka Wine Merchants, Kona Brewing Co. and Waialua Sodaworks. Ginger martinis will also be served. Along with food and drink, you can bid in a silent auction or stroll the galleries. Tickets are $50 in advance; $60 at the door, if any remain. Animal issuesErik Marcus, author of "Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, & Money," will be the guest speaker at the March meeting of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 7 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Beach Park."Meat Market" (Brio Press, 2005) examines ethical standards in animal agriculture, offering ways to combat animal cruelty. Marcus is also the author of "Vegan; The New Ethics of Eating" (McBooks press, 2000), and runs Vegan.com. He hosts "Erik's Diner," a daily "podcast" available through the Web site. Admission is free.
