Cabaret diningA cabaret is a raucous place where music and dance on stage are accompanied by food and drink at the table. But "Cabaret," the play, is serious theater, which normally takes place in a formal setting, the audience politely seated, facing front. Not so with Manoa Valley Theatre's "Cabaret," opening tonight. The theater will be set up as a cabaret, with the audience seated at round cocktail tables. German beer and wine will be served, along with light meals. Service will be before the show and during intermission, although you can keep eating through the performance. The German-themed menu will be prepared by Volcano Joe's and includes Bratwurst & Bacon-Potato Salad with Beer Dressing, Focaccia Bread with Bierkase & Grapes, as well as butter cookies. Doors will open an hour prior to curtain time, to allow for pre-performance dining. "Cabaret" is set in Berlin in 1929, a turbulent time with Hitler on the rise. Andrew Sakaguchi stars in MVT's production as the Emcee of the Kit Kat Klub cabaret and Erin Wong as his headline singer, Sally Bowles. The production, directed by John Rampage, runs through April 3, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and 4 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $30 through March 27; the price goes up to $35 for the final week, which is an extension of the original run. Discounts available for seniors, military and youths 25 and under.
