Seasiders, Vulcans headed to NCAA II tourney

Pacific West Conference champion Hawaii-Hilo (24-3) earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA II West Region tournament and is slated to face No. 7 Cal State Chico (18-9) in a first-round game Friday.

The winner moves on to play the Cal Poly Pomona vs. Seattle Pacific winner.

Brigham Young-Hawaii (16-8) held on to the eighth spot in the West Region poll and also earned a ticket to the region tournament.

The Seasiders, seeded eighth, face top seed Western Washington on Friday.

Rainbow Warrior tennis struggles on road

The UH men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of San Francisco yesterday afternoon, dropping to 3-9 this season.

Hawaii started the match well, taking two of the three doubles matches, as the teams of Dalibor Ptak and Derrick Lajola and Ryan Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam won 8-6 and 8-2, respectively.

In singles play, however, Hawaii faltered and dropped all except one to the Dons. Sceats pulled out the one singles win of the day with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over USF's Andrew Hogan.

The Rainbow Warriors return home for a four-match homestand, beginning with a match against Bloomsburg on Friday.

Wahine beat Portland, lose to Alabama

The University of Hawaii softball team beat Portland 3-0 in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament yesterday, and then lost 4-3 to Alabama.

Melissa Coogan pitched a four-hitter for the Rainbow Wahine in the first game.

In the second game, Alabama broke a 3-all tie with a run in the top of the seventh.

» The Hawaii-Hilo softball team took a doubleheader from Hawaii Pacific, 8-3 and 4-1, yesterday at Sea Warrior Field. The Vulcans improved to 12-2 overall, 5-1 in conference play with the win, while the Sea Warriors dropped to 10-4 overall, 2-2 conference.

In the first game of the doubleheader, former Kamehameha standout Leo Sing Chow went the distance in the win, striking out three and walking three while only giving up eight hits to the 33 batters she faced. Sing Chow helped her own cause hitting 2-4 with a home run and three runs scored, while driving in two. First baseman Meghan Jost connected for a home run on one of her two hits and third baseman Lisa Jackson added two hits.

Sing Chow was also a major contributor offensively in the second game, going 2-for-4 with a double. Chelsea Osborne and Charity Senas also added two hits apiece. Hilo's Sarah Steele threw the complete game, striking out two and walking none.

Vulcan baseball falls short

The visiting Florida State Seminoles (19-1) swept the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans (1-26) yesterday, 5-2 and 9-1, at Simmons Field.

The Seminoles broke open a 2-2 game in the top of the fifth when Gibbs Chapman slammed a double to right-center to drive in Shane Robinson for the go-ahead run. Seminole pitcher Hunter Jones (3-0) picked up the win, striking out seven and walking none.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Seminoles, led by the hitting of Tony Thomas Jr., nearly shut out the Vulcans with a 9-1 win. Thomas finished the game 2-for-3 with two triples, one run and three RBIs.

The series concludes today with a 3 p.m. game at Wong Stadium.
