Donations to fund college scholarships
The Hawaii Advertising Federation is asking for community support to help fund the first of three-year scholarships to be awarded to students majoring in advertising, marketing, public relations or communications.
The scholarships would range from $250 to $1,500 per year.
Donations will be accepted on an ongoing basis, but commitments for the 2005-06 academic year should be made by March 18. Donations may be made in honor of an individual, organization, etc.
Establishing a scholarship fund is in line with the nonprofit federation's overall mission of educating the community about advertising as a way to invest in their own businesses for long-term growth and prosperity, according to a letter soliciting support from HAF President Matt Heim and education committee chairwoman Louise Saffery.
In their letter to media and advertising-related organizations, Heim and Saffery said, "No industry can thrive and grow without an educated and trained work force."
HAF was established in 1978. For more information, call 532-0555.

Police say owner of car in hit-and-run arrested
Police arrested a Honolulu man last night on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run accident in McCully on Saturday that left two teenage girls injured.
Police said the man was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. at his Honolulu address. The man's age was not immediately available, but police said he is the registered owner of the car involved in Saturday's hit-and-run.
The car was found earlier in the day.
Police said it matched the description reported by witnesses: a beige- or gold-colored compact car with extensive damage to the windshield.
The accident happened at about 4:10 p.m. Saturday after the girls -- ages 14 and 15 -- tried to cross at the intersection of Algaroba and McCully streets against the light. They were both taken to the Queen's Medical Center.
The 14-year-old was in critical condition, while the 15-year-old was stable. The families of the teenagers have asked for their privacy and declined to speak to the media.
