University of Hawaii administrators and regents will hear from students about a proposed tuition increase that would more than double the cost of going to the state's four-year colleges.
A series of public meetings is scheduled beginning tomorrow through the end of the month.
The current tuition proposal would increase undergraduate resident tuition at the flagship UH-Manoa campus to $2,184 a semester in the fall of 2006, from $1,752 in 2005. By fall 2010, tuition at Manoa would increase to $3,912.
The $735-a-semester tuition at community colleges for Hawaii residents in 2005 would rise to $855 beginning in 2006 and up to $1,335 in 2010.
Linda Johnsrud, UH interim associate vice president for planning and policy, said the testimony at the public hearings will be considered as administrators work on a final tuition recommendation for the Board of Regents over the next few months. Written testimony will also be taken.
The schedule for the meetings is:
» Tomorrow: 3 p.m., Campus Center Ballroom, UH Manoa.
» Thursday: 3 p.m., Campus Center Dining Room, UH Hilo.
» March 14: 3 p.m., Campus Center Ballroom, UH-Manoa to hear comments about tuition for the UH-Manoa professional schools of law, medicine, nursing, dental hygiene and graduate business.
