Paladins charge past Rainbow Wahine

The Furman women's tennis team cruised past Hawaii 6-1 yesterday at the USD West Tennis Courts in San Diego, Calif.

Lauren Fitzgerald, ranked No. 75 nationally, won Hawaii's only match. Fitzgerald defeated Mary Neill Hagood at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2.

On Wednesday, the Rainbow Wahine defeated UC Riverside 4-3 at Riverside, Calif. Hawaii won two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point and then split the six singles matches with the Highlanders to seal the victory.

Singles winners were Fitzgerald, Kimberly Curtis at No. 5 singles and Kana Aikawa at No. 6. Doubles winners were Fitzgerald and Sylvia Jaros and Curtis and Chloe Bihag.

Hawaii (3-8) wraps up its four-game road trip tomorrow at Cal State Fullerton.

Rainbow Wahine wins opener, moves up in poll

The University of Hawaii water polo team downed No. 11 Michigan 6-5 on Wednesday in their home opener at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Monika Kruszona scored two goals to lead the Rainbow Wahine, who trailed 3-2 at halftime.

Kruszona's goal midway through the third quarter tied the game and Malia Tarayao's goal 2 minutes later gave Hawaii (7-6) the lead for good.

Hawaii played without goalie Meike De Nooy and utility player Lefke VanBelkum, who are both in Barcelona, Spain for the European World Qualification Tournament. Kruszona left for Barcelona yesterday.

Also on Wednesday, the Rainbow Wahine moved up four spots to No. 5 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Top 20 poll. The ranking is the team's highest in five years.

BYUH signs utility player: The Brigham Young University-Hawaii water polo team signed high school All-American Jory Johnson.

Johnson is a utility player at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, Calif.

BYUH coach Aukai Ferguson said Johnson is a versatile player. Johnson follows former Murrieta Valley player Kevin Van Haaster to BYUH.

Na Koa Wong golf tournament set for April 19

The annual Na Koa Ed Wong Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds for the Hawaii football booster club has been set for April 19.

The tournament will be a three-golfer shotgun scramble.

The tournament is named in honor of the former Na Koa Football Club president. The registration deadline is April 5, and sponsorships are available. For information, call Ben Yee at 542-8912 or 956-4513. Registration includes, lunch, beverages and the awards banquet.

Designs needed for shirts

The Waikiki Roughwater Swim is holding a T-shirt design contest for its race on Sept. 4.

Entries must include the words "Waikiki Roughwater Swim 2005" and camera ready designs are due on March 26. Designs should be submitted to Ted Sheppard, P.O. Box 2847, Wailuku, 96796. The winning entry will receive $300.

10 Star Camp applications sought

Applications are now being evaluated for the invitation-only Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. Camps will be run at 21 mainland locations, and an All-America team will be selected.
