Seasiders sweep Notre Dame de Namur

Stephanie Pane'e drilled a double to center to drive home Chynna Wilcox from second base for the winning run in Brigham Young-Hawaii's 3-2 victory over Notre Dame de Namur yesterday in Laie.

The win gave the Seasiders a doubleheader sweep. They also rallied to win the first game, 4-3.

In the opener, Echo Hatch scattered five hits for Brigham Young-Hawaii (4-4) to earn the victory, while Wilcox drove in the winning run.

The Argonauts, an NAIA team, dropped to 6-8.

» Cal Baptist swept Chaminade in a softball doubleheader on Monday, 7-1, 6-1.

In the first game, the Lady Lancers' Kristen Hernandez went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

In the second game, three Cal Baptist pitchers -- Candice Thomas, Tamra Overstreet and Geanie Jenkins -- combined to one-hit the Silverswords, while Tami Trujillo and Jamie Lowe each hit a home run.

Hawaii's Wiktorsson gains postseason honors

University of Hawaii diver Mats Wiktorsson and coaches Mike Brown and Anita Rossing took home postseason honors at last weekend's National Independent Conference Championships at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

Wiktorsson, who won both the 3-meter springboard and platform, was named the NIC Diver of the Year. The freshman also placed second in the 1-meter springboard.

Brown and Rossing were named diving co-coaches of the year. It was the second such distinction shared between the husband and wife team. They were named the PCSC Diving Coaches of the Year in 2001. Brown also earned honors in 2002 and 2003.

Next week, the UH men's and women's diving teams take part in the Zone E Diving Regionals in Oklahoma City, Okla., trying to earn a spot in the NCAA championships.

Vulcans rise to No. 9 in Division II poll

Hawaii-Hilo moved up four spots to No. 9 in the NABC Division II basketball poll.

The Vulcans (24-3) received 138 points, just two behind No. 8 Texas A&M Commerce.

Hawaii-Hilo finished its regular season and awaits today's NCAA Division II regional poll in anticipation of Sunday's announcement of the host site for the March 12-15 regional tournament. The Vulcans are expected to host.

Coaching workshop set for Big Island

The Positive Coaching Alliance and the Volunteer Resource Center of Hawaii is holding a workshop on character and values in education.

The workshop is April 8 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in South Kohala. Registration is 7:30 a.m., with the event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fee is $10 and the deadline to enter is March 14.
