Former Pharcyde
man is at the Wave

It was back in high school when I first heard the Pharcyde. Just as gangsta rap started its assault on pop culture, here came 1992's "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde."

By the time I got to college in Los Angeles, the group released "Labcabincalifornia," and I spent shifts at my campus radio station spinning cuts like "Groupie Therapy," "The Hustle" and "Runnin'." That last track was rediscovered in 2002 when it was included on Eminem's "8 Mile" soundtrack.

Tonight at the Wave Waikiki, former Pharcyde member Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart will share songs off his new solo effort, "The Loneliest Punk." He'll be joined by Jennifer Johns (who performed here with Psychokinetics and recently opened for Mos Def at Pipeline) and Gershwin BLX members Omni and Moleman. Local group Dead Monkeys will open.

Cover for tonight's stop on the "Island Chain Tour" is $10 before midnight; call 941-0424, ext. 12 ...

I NEEDED a break from the mainstream, so after a quick pass by the regular spots on Friday night, I made my way out to a secluded spot on the east side.

My destination was a going-away party for DJ Amar, who's returning home to India. Some friends had set up a generator, lights and turntables to rock the sand just steps from the ocean. It was a welcome change from the typical evenings I spend indoors with tipsy club kids ... And instead of heading to "ARTafterDARK" this month, I stayed on the underground tip and paid a visit to Windward Mall.

Kavet the Catalyst had e-mailed me about an art show that was "for the youth and not the scenesters, trendys and stuck up."

Mililani resident Stanstill is the featured artist at Prototype's "Heartists 2" exhibit, which opened on Saturday. You've got until March 26 to check it out for yourself ...

IT'S A reunion on 102.7 Da Bomb this month -- former sidekick Blunt rejoined Kid Leo and Paul Ogata yesterday, and will fill in on the morning show while Ogata is in Hong Kong and Singapore for comedy gigs.

"It's not quite the scale of the Beatles reuniting, or even Salt-N-Pepa, but definitely bigger than Kajagoogoo," says Ogata ...

AND HAPPY birthday to local model Antonia Aqui, who celebrated recently at Zanzabar. She's also featured this week on Maxim.com as a contender in the magazine's "Hometown Hotties" contest. Be sure to get online and vote for her ...
