6 local tech firms win matching grants

The state High Technology Development Corp. has awarded grants totaling $136,155 to six local companies under the federal Small Business Innovation Research matching grant program.

The recipients include Oceanit, awarded $35,000; Referentia Systems Inc., $25,000; Onomea Scientific Inc., $21,155; Pacific Island Technology Inc., $20,000; 21st Century Systems Inc., $15,000; and Makai Ocean Engineering Inc., $20,000.

DCCA posts procurement decisions

The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs' Office of Administrative Hearings has posted all contested case decisions regarding the state procurement code on the Web.

The posted decisions date to 1994 and cover state and county procurement. The address is www.hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/oah/oah_decisions/Procurement.

Also, starting today, the hearings office will post all final and recommended decisions issued from the beginning of this year, including no-fault insurance cases and disciplinary actions. Decisions issued before Jan. 1 will be added later.

Kapolei affordable housing sought

The state is requesting proposals to develop affordable housing units on more than 20 vacant acres in the Villages of Kapolei.

An informational meeting will be held in the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii's board room at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Proposals must be received by 4:30 p.m. April 29.

Kauai restaurant concession for bid

The state is inviting bids to open a concession to run a full-service restaurant at the Wailua Marina River State Park in East Kauai starting June 1.

Notices of intent to bid must be received by the Division of State Parks by 2 p.m. Monday. A site inspection was held yesterday.

Lighters to be banned at airports

ATLANTA » Add lighters to the long list of items you can't take on an airplane.

The Transportation Security Administration, which oversees aviation security, announced yesterday that lighters will be confiscated at airport security checkpoints starting April 14.

Smokers who light up in airport smoking lounges aren't completely out of luck: Matches will be allowed.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act that President Bush signed Dec. 17 ordered the TSA to ban butane lighters. The agency decided to prohibit all other lighters, too.

An FBI investigation of shoe bomber Richard Reid found that he would have succeeded in igniting explosives in his shoe if he'd used a lighter on his Paris-to-Miami flight Dec. 22, 2001.
