The Bloomberg / Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Barnwell rises again
Barnwell Industries Inc., showing no signs of slowing down, rose for the sixth straight week as it gained 5.9 percent to post the second-best performance in the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin index. The oil and gas exploration company, which has Big Island real estate holdings, closed yesterday at $53.50 and is the top Hawaii performer in 2005 with a 44.3 percent gain.
Penny stock Mera Pharmaceuticals Inc. led the way in the holiday-shortened week with a 15.4 percent rise to 1.5 cents. Cyanotech Corp. had the third-best gain as it rose 4 percent to $1.29.
