In the end however, the No. 1-seeded team lived up to its billing as Iolani continued its four-year dominance over the state of Hawaii, defeating the Mustangs to advance to the semifinals.
The three-time defending state champions, who haven't lost to a team from Hawaii since falling to Kalaheo in the 2001 state championship game, were led by Kyle Pape, who scored 13 of his game-high 31 points in the third quarter, helping to spark the Raiders, who struggled in the first half.
"Our defense was very suspect (in the first half)," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "Our kids had a bit of the jitters and just fouled too much."
Iolani jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after forcing turnovers on the Mustangs' first two possessions, forcing Kalaheo head coach Chico Furtado to call a 20-second timeout 28 seconds into the game to settle his team down. Trailing by five after one quarter, the Mustangs finally seemed to get comfortable handling Iolani's pressure as they outscored the Raiders 15-8 to hold a two-point halftime lead.
The second half proved to be all about Pape however. He scored 11 of his 13 points consecutively in a four-minute span to open the second half, and nearly topped that performance by scoring nine of the Raiders' first 13 points in the fourth quarter to help build a 15-point lead.
Pape finished 14-for-15 from the free-throw line and added four rebounds and three assists. David Moore, who is a perfect 20-for-20 from the charity stripe in the tournament, scored 19 points to lead the Mustangs.
