Sabers’ comeback
drives ’Cats wild

The Konawaena Wildcats are smiling on the outside.

Inside, however, they're still in disbelief. A bizarre series of judgment calls in the final 3 seconds of regulation set up a clutch, game-tying shot by James Bannister, and Campbell went on to oust Konawaena 69-62 in overtime yesterday at Blaisdell Arena.

Campbell (21-4), runner-up in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, advanced to the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship. The Sabers meet Iolani today.

"If this was the beginning of the season, down that much, we would've lost," said Bannister, who scored 10 points in the final quarter and extra period. "It felt good to have Coach's (Sol Batoon) confidence and have the ball in my hands."

Konawaena (24-6), champion of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, lost three starters to fouls in the final quarter. Still, the Wildcats led 59-54 with 15 seconds to go after Sean Fujii hit a pair of free throws. Campbell answered with a 3-pointer by Tristan Bailey from 23 feet with 8 seconds to play. Konawaena reserve center Shane Heinecke was fouled on the inbounds play and missed two free throws with 6 seconds left, setting up an improbable finish to regulation time.

Campbell took the rebound and raced upcourt, calling time out with 1 second to go. The clock was adjusted to 3 seconds, since officials weren't exactly sure when Batoon called time from the bench.

On the ensuing inbounds pass from the sideline, Robert Morris' pass to Bannister in the middle of the key was knocked away by Kona's Tory Guillermo and the ball went loose. Kona's Shannon Hardie pounced on the ball and was on the ground, covered by Sabers, as time expired.

The official under the basket waved his arms outward to indicate the end of play, and even went to the sideline to congratulate both coaches. However, the other two officials convened and determined that Hardie had traveled with 1 second left. "Our guy got tackled," Konawaena coach Donald Awa said.

"They called a travel? I don't know what happened," Bailey said.

Bannister was also unsure. "I was on the ground, underneath," he said.

That set up a final play from under the basket. Morris barely escaped a 5-second call and fed Bannister in the low post, where the 6-foot-3 senior turned around and swished a 10-footer at the horn.

"There's no way he could have caught the ball, turned around and shot the ball in 1 second," Awa said.

Campbell dominated overtime.

"I appealed it to the man in charge," Awa said of his discussion with the HHSAA. "When you lose like that, on a call like that, that's kind of tough. None of the referees were gonna call it. They got talked into it by the other coach (Batoon)."

Bailey scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Campbell. Bannister added 16 points and 10 boards for the Sabers, who committed 22 turnovers and shot just 29-for-46 from the line (63 percent).

That was better than Konawaena, which shot just 50 percent from the stripe (19 of 38). The Wildcats' T.J. Akina scored 18 points and had four steals, but committed two unnecessary fouls in the second half and fouled out with 4:49 left in regulation. Max Watson, a 6-6 senior, commanded the post with 10 rebounds and six blocked shots before fouling out with 1:12 remaining in regulation.

"I thought we had it, but when we went to overtime, that was hard," Watson said. "Tory fouled out, and he brings the ball up for us."

Trenson Himalaya poured in 21 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:33 left, as the Bears outlasted the Buffanblu. Baldwin rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit for the win.

"We knew we were up against Punahou. We needed to come out with a bang," said Himalaya.

The Bears meet Kahuku tonight in the semifinals.

Baldwin (22-2) entered as the No. 3 seed despite an unbeaten season in the Maui Interscholastic League. That served as fuel for the Bears.

Seniors Cody Tesoro and Cody Nakamura added 14 points each for Baldwin.

"In the seedings, they put us at No. 3, so I felt like we had something to prove," said Tesoro, a third-year starter at point guard.

Jeremiah Ostrowski scored 31 points before fouling out with 30 seconds left. No one else scored in double figures for Punahou (22-10).
