No. 2 seeds advance at USTA National Open

The boys and girls No. 2 seeds advanced in the USTA National Open at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.

Second-seeded Maggie Yahner moved on with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lauren Holzberg in the girls tournament. Sixth-seeded Brintney Larson and eight-seeded Samantha Georgino also advanced with victories.

In the boys tournament, second-seeded Wesley Miller outlasted Stephen Robertson 7-6 (5), 6-3. Fourth-seeded Tommy Hicks also won to make the next round.

Hornets sacks Rainbow Wahine

No. 44 Sacramento State beat Hawaii 7-0 in women's tennis yesterday.

Hawaii's Lauren Fitzgerald put up the biggest fight in singles matches, losing 6-2, 6-4 to the Hornets' Margarita Karnaukhova.

In doubles, Fitzgerald and Sylvia Jaros lost a tightly contested 8-6 match to Sacramento State's Karnaukhova and Anna Karaveyeva.

» In men's tennis, Hawaii lost a 5-2 decision to UNLV yesterday. The Warriors two wins came in singles as Ryan Sceats defeated Romain Massaro 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) and Derrick Lajola topped Sean Hubbard 7-6, 6-4.

Sea Warriors, Vulcans split in softball

Sarah Steele pitched a complete-game five-hitter to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 6-2 PacWest Conference college softball victory over Hawaii Pacific in the opener of a doubleheader yesterday in Kaneohe.

The Sea Warriors (3-1) split the twin-bill as Brandi Peiler improved to 2-0 on the season and scattered seven hits in a 4-3 win in the second game.

Hawaii Pacific's Jamie Reyes went 5-for-6 in the two games, while Chelsea Osbourne went 3-for-6 for Hawaii-Hilo (4-2).

Nebraska finishes sweep of Hawaii-Hilo

Bryce Nimmo went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Joe Simokaitis and Curtis Ledbetter had two hits each as Nebraska beat Hawaii-Hilo 8-1 in a college baseball game yesterday on the Big Island.

The victory finished the Cornhuskers' four-game sweep of the Vulcans.

Johnny Dudoit led the way on offense for Hawaii-Hilo (1-17) with two hits, including a double. The Vulcans managed just six hits off of three Nebraska pitchers.

Boxing coaches clinic on Saturday

United States Amateur Boxing, Inc., is running a certification clinic for boxing coaches on March 5 at the Momilani Community Center in Pearl City.

The clinic, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will be conducted by Eiichi Jumawan.
