Rights activist from Japan to speak at UH

Human rights activist Yuri Kochiyama will be the keynote speaker at the Japanese American Citizens League "Day of Remembrance" today.

Kochiyama, a friend of the late Malcolm X, has been active in civil rights and building intercultural alliances for more than 40 years. Kochiyama has championed civil rights, protested racial inequality and supported political prisoners in the United States and throughout the world.

In addition, author and publisher Saleem Ahmed, author of "Beyond Veil and Holy War: Islamic Teachings and Muslim Practices with Biblical Comparisons," will speak. A native of India, Ahmed is a former senior fellow at the University of Manoa's East-West Center.

The Day of Remembrance will be 2-4 p.m. at the UH-Manoa Architecture Auditorium. For more information about the free event, contact Marcia Sakamoto-Wong at 833-4930.

Forum to address classified research

A panel of local and mainland experts will speak at a forum Thursday to discuss classified research at the University of Hawaii and institutions of similar size.

"Classified Research Policy at UH and Peer Institutions" will be held in Classroom 2 of the William S. Richardson School of Law from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The seminar comes after protesters gathered last month to speak out against the establishment of a military research center at UH-Manoa and raised questions about classified research that is currently being conducted at the university.

Thursday's panel members will be:

» Michael Hamnett of the Research Corporation of UH.
» Bill Bakamis, associate director of business and finance at the University of Washington.
» Jeff Check, assistant vice president for research at the University of Colorado.
» Margo Edwards, director of the Hawaii Mapping Research Group.
» Ken Kipnis, professor of philosophy and a member of the UH-Manoa Faculty Senate's ad hoc committee on classified research.

Following the session, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Pearl City fire is traced to stove

A kitchen stove that was accidentally turned on was the cause of a fire at a Pearl City home Saturday, fire investigators said.

Damage to the home located at 1861 Hookupa St. was estimated at $240,000. The American Red Cross assisted a family of five with living arrangements. Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said a dog died in the fire.

Man charged with drugs, hiding in car

Police charged a 30-year-old man who allegedly was found hiding in a car in Kapolei with drugs and stolen credit cards.

The man was identified as Gavin G. Daguio, of no local address.

Police said he was found hiding in a car parked in front of a Kapolei home at 3:25 a.m. Saturday.

He was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle after police found crystal methamphetamine in his pocket and three credit cards belonging to other people.

Daguio was charged yesterday for unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, credit card theft and promoting dangerous drugs in the third degree. He is being held in lieu of $11,000.

NORTH SHORE
Identity released of woman found burning

The medical examiner's office identified a 78-year-old Waialua woman who died from severe burns as Severina Vidad.

Police said Vidad was found by her son about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday sitting in a chair with her clothes on fire. Fire investigators have said a cigarette likely started the fire.

Police said Vidad's son put the fire out with a blanket. She was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died Saturday.

EAST OAHU
Motorcycle rider charged with theft

Police have charged a 26-year-old man with stealing a motorcycle.

Police identified the man as Peter M.K. Serikawa of Kailua.

Serikawa was arrested Saturday while police were monitoring for speeding on Kalanianaole Highway and Keolu Drive. An officer clocked Serikawa for speeding on a motorcycle that was reported stolen a day earlier.

Police said Serikawa slowed down but sped off when police motioned him to pull over. They pursued Serikawa after he ditched the stolen motorcycle and fled on foot.

He was charged Saturday with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Police said Serikawa was on probation at the time of his arrest. He is being held in lieu of $25,000.

CENTRAL OAHU
Teen broke window after fight, police say

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy Saturday after he allegedly broke a window at a fast-food restaurant in Mililani.

About 4:05 p.m. the suspect had an argument with his girlfriend at Taco Bell and struck a large glass window, police said, resulting in a "spider web" crack.

The suspect and his girlfriend fled in a vehicle. Police later located the suspect's vehicle. The teen was arrested on suspicion of second-degree criminal property damage and released pending further investigation.
