It's quillow time

Learn how to make a quillow, or quilt-pillow, at a free workshop at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Kahuku Public & School Library.

Bonnie Naluai will demonstrate how to create an easy quillow for home or gift-giving.

The class is suitable for ages 12 to adult. To register, call the library or sign up at the circulation desk, 293-8935.

Registered participants will receive a supply list. Participants may bring their own materials and sewing machines and complete their quillow in class. Those unable to bring a sewing machine may observe.

The library is on the Kahuku High and Intermediate School campus, 56-490 Kamehameha Highway.

'Oiwi arrives in style

A release party for 'Oiwi: A Native Hawaiian Journal Vol. 3, "Huliau" (Time of Change), will take place 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kamakakuokalani, Center for Hawaiian Studies, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

There will be music by Kamau, in addition to an art exhibit by the visual artists and readings by the writers in the issue. Refreshments will be served.

"Huliau" also features a section honoring founding editor Mahealani Dudoit, testimonies regarding the development of Mauna Kea and articles by leading native Hawaiian educators on various aspects of Hawaiian education.

The center is at 2645 Dole St. Call 956-3031.

Tracing your roots

The "Introduction to Genealogy Research Workshops" first offered by The Friends of 'Iolani Palace in the summer of 2003 proved to be so popular that a second workshop will be held beginning March 10 in the Kanaina Building (Old Archives) on the palace grounds.

The hands-on, two-day "Digging for Your Roots" workshops conducted by Fran McFarland and Rhoda Kalua are limited to 20 students each.

Cost is $55 and includes a syallabus/workbook. Sessions will be held on Thursdays for six weeks, March 10 and 17, April 7 and 14, and May 5 and 12. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 522-0827 for information and registration.

Free choral serenade

The Hawaii Pacific University International Vocal Ensemble will represent Hawaii in Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, in June 2006 in a musical celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth.

To raise $40,000 for the trip, the ensemble will host a fund-raising concert, "Moonlit Serenade," at 7 p.m. March 11 at First Presbyterian Church, 1822 Keeaumoku St.

The performance will be followed by a reception, including light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the performers.

Admission is free but donations are welcome.

The HPU ensemble has been performing for three years throughout Oahu, and made its Carnegie Hall debut last June in a musical tribute to composer Morten Lauridsen.

Call 544-1127.
