RAINBOW BASEBALL
’Bows blow lead,
then beat Pacific
The Hawaii Rainbows survived a sloppy defensive night and edged Pacific 9-8 in a nonconference baseball game when Isaac Omura walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning last night.
Jonathan Hee reached on an error by UOP shortstop Dale Hall to start the 10th. Derek Dupree was safe at first on a throwing error by pitcher Eric Stolp trying to get Hee at second.
Jose Castaneda sacrificed the runners up a base and Joe Spiers was intentionally walked.
Stolp fanned Greg Kish, but, with a 2-2 count, Omura took two fastballs that were just outside to get the free pass.
"We played well enough to lose, with four errors and walking the tying run in the ninth inning," said UH coach Mike Trapasso. "The only good thing was we competed and never gave up. That's the only reason we won.
"Pacific never stopped competing and I'm sure they are fired up and will give us one heck of a game tomorrow."
The crowd, 2,796, was the largest of the year at Les Murakami Stadium and included 1,266 fans who took advantage of the Bracket Busters promotion and entered free following the basketball game.
The Tigers had rallied for three runs, two of them unearned, in the ninth inning to claim an 8-7 lead. The runs came with two outs on doubles by Brandon Gottier and Jordan Seiber off Guy McDowell.
Hawaii (5-2) forced extra innings when Castaneda was hit by a pitch, took second and third on wild pitches by Stolp and scored on Matt Inouye's single to center through a drawn-in infield.
The Tigers scored first for the third consecutive game, getting two unearned runs in the second inning.
Gottier and Seiber grounded singles to left to begin the inning and advanced a base on Jesse Kovacs' sacrifice bunt. Ramon Glasgow smashed a ball right back at UH starter Colby Summer. The 6-foot-8 right-hander caught the ball, but his throw to third, trying to double off Gottier, was wild, allowing both runners to score.
The 'Bows tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Inouye singled to deep short and stopped at second on Rocky Russo's single to left. After Inouye was forced at third on Schafer Magana's sacrifice bunt attempt, Dupree drove a ball into the right-center-field alley for a two-run triple, his first career extra-base hit.
Pacific regained the lead in the top of the third. Hall doubled to left to start the inning. After Matt Berezay flied out to Dupree on the warning track in center, Jerin Harper hit the first homer of the year at Murakami Stadium -- a shot over the left-field wall on a one-ball pitch.
The Tigers took a 5-2 lead in the sixth with another unearned run. Magana tried to backhand Gottier's slow bouncer up the third-base line. He turned the attempt into a two-base error as the ball caromed off his glove into foul territory.
Following the error, Summer, who gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings, was replaced by Rich Olsen.
Gottier moved to third on Seiber's single to left on a 3-2 pitch and continued home when Robbie Wilder misplayed the ball.
The 'Bows responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the sixth. They made use of a hit batter, three walks and three singles to score five times and take a 7-5 lead.
With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Luis Avila walked on a 3-2 pitch from UOP starter Luke Massetti to force Adam Roberts in with the first run.
Spiers, facing reliever Josh Schmidt, beat out a high chopper over the mound for an RBI to score Inouye. It extended Spiers' hitting streak to seven games.
Greg Kish drew a bases-loaded walk, sending Magana home with the tying run. Omura then broke the tie by grounding a two-strike pitch into right field that scored Avila and Spiers.
Junior right-hander Justin Costi starts on the mound for UH in today's series finale at 1:05 p.m.
