Sing Chow's 1-hitter beats Seasiders

Leo Sing Chow threw a one-hitter as the Hawaii-Hilo softball team swept a doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday at Laie.

Sing Chow's performance led the Vulcans to a 2-0 victory in the opener. Hilo's Chelsea Osborne had two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, the Vulcans (3-1) managed just four hits, but three BYUH (2-2) errors led to a 5-2 win. Charity Senas hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to open up a 1-all game.

» The Hawaii softball team endured its second day of rain at the Worth Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., as the weather canceled all of yesterday's games.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-4) will face No. 2 Arizona today. Hawaii played one tourney game on Friday before rain canceled its second game.

Brigham Young-Hawaii women add to streak

The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team improved its NCAA-record winning streak to 105 yesterday with an 8-1 win over Hawaii-Hilo in Hilo.

Krystal Hangai was the only Vulcan to take a game from the Seasiders, defeating Trisha Piercy 6-1, 6-3.

BYUH improved to 4-0 while Hilo dropped to 0-2.

Also, the BYUH men downed the Vulcans twice yesterday, winning 5-2 and 7-2. The first game was a continuation of Friday's match that was suspended midway due to darkness. BYUH improved to 4-0, while the Vulcans dropped to 0-3.

» Ryan Sceats picked up Hawaii's only win yesterday as the men's tennis team fell to No. 41 Oklahoma 6-1 in Las Vegas.

Sceats defeated Alexei Ivanov 7-5, 7-6 (9) at No. 3 singles to improve his dual-match record to 4-1.

Huskers rally past Vulcans

Nebraska scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally past Hawaii-Hilo 6-3 in a nonconference baseball game yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.

Gary Ahu Jr. drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Vulcans a 2-1 lead. But the Huskers rallied in the top of the seventh as Alex Gordon, Curtis Ledbetter and Daniel Bruce all drove in a run.

Sea Warriors topple Mustangs

Dante Sykes scored 22 points and Audrius Peciukas had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to an 82-63 basketball victory over Western New Mexico last night at the Mid-Pacific Institute gym.

Alex Swervbin added 16 points and four assists for the Sea Warriors, which improved 10-13 overall and 4-9 in the PacWest Conference.

Matt Enriquez led the Mustangs (6-19, 1-13) with 18 points.

» Jake Chrisman made 13 of his 16 shots and scored 32 points to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 118-84 victory over Montana State-Billings last night in Laie.

Thomas Watkins chipped in 22 points for the Seasiders (15-7, 10-3 PacWest).

Justin Hassell scored 23 points for the Yellowjackets (16-8, 8-6).

Hawaii players fall at USTA National Open

Michael Lim of Honolulu and Holden Ching of Kamuela won their first-round matches at the USTA National Open at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday. But both were defeated in the second round.

Lim beat Joshua Finkelstein of Los Angeles 6-2, 7-5, but lost to fifth-seeded Alex Krueger-Wyman of Pasadena, Calif., 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Ching advanced when David Seyforth retired due to injury, but he was crushed by second-seeded Wesley Miller of Anaheim, Calif., 6-2, 6-4.

Brooke Doane of Ewa Beach, Jenna Kappel of Honolulu and Jill Kappel of Honolulu made it to the second round of the girls tournament before losing.
